Mary, the Mother of our Savior Jesus Christ, is mentioned by name few times. However, her story affected generations of people and will continue to do so until the second coming of Christ. The story of Mary can be found in the beginning of each of the four gospels. In the first chapter of Matthew, Luke and John, we learn who Mary was and the pivotal role she played in delivering our Savior. Mary, the mother of Jesus, is mentioned again a few more times, at the temple when Jesus was twelve, at the wedding where Jesus performed his first miracle, and also at the crucifixion of Christ.
It is believed that Mary was a young girl at the time when she was visited by the angel Gabriel, when he informed her that she would be the mother of the Savior of the world. At the time, she was engaged to Joseph; a descendant of David, and most importantly she was a virgin. Mary experienced God in a way that no one else has, from her miraculous conception to actually carrying the Savior in her womb, to birthing and raising Him. Mary was chosen because she was a virgin. Being born of a woman gives Jesus the ability to be called a man and because He was not fathered by a man but by God. He was and is without sin.
Mary was faced with a tough task, to explain to her future husband that she was impregnated through the Holy Spirit and that she was still a virgin. Imagine being told something of that magnitude. It would be hard to believe, and even harder to stay around and still marry the person. However, Joseph, the man that Mary was engaged to, was obedient to the angel of the Lord that appeared to him in a dream and married her still. The conception and birth of Jesus would be hard to accept, especially if one tried to place logical reasoning behind it. However, God already knew that and sent angels to give an explanation of the situation. Fortunately, Joseph was willing to listen and follow His will regardless of what the situation seemed like. At that time, seemingly the only two options were to either stone Mary or divorce her quietly. Due to Joseph’s obedience, the prophecy of the Lord’s coming was fulfilled.
Even after the birth of her Son, Mary faced more problems. She was worried when she thought Jesus was lost, she witnessed the persecution of her child, and even worse, she was there when He was crucified. Mary shows that she is a strong woman, from being so young and allowing God to take control of her life, to parenting the Messiah, and even watching the death of her Son. Mary’s significance is she allowed God to use her in one of the biggest events in history by becoming the mother of the Savior who would save all people, who would believe and follow him.
Mary showed great faith, and even when her situation could have been less than a desirable one, she relied on God. She accepted that He would work the situation out for her, even if it was one that was seemingly inexplicable. Mary’s faith serves as an inspiration to see what our lives can be when we live a life that is acceptable to God and forsake all others. Even when she was facing disgrace and possibly death, she was willing to submit to God’s will so that He can accomplish and fulfill the prophecy.
I live in a small Georgia town that you most likely have never heard of and I LOVE it! My house is more than full as I am a single mother of four & caregiver to my aging mother and uncle. Lover of all things Outlander. Goes to the beat of her own drum woman.

This was very well written and easy to read. “Mary’s faith serves as an inspiration to see what our lives can be when we live a life that is acceptable to God and forsake all others. ” – I’ve never looked at it that way, but so very true.
Thanks for the encouragement!

I can’t even imagine being in Mary’s position. How a mother can bear to stand by and watch as her child is persecuted and then crucified. Talk about having faith and unwavering faith. I don’t know that I could do that. Mary really was an amazingly strong woman.

It is easy to see that God was with Mary through everything and the only way she could go through everything she did was to have God with here. It doesn’t seem humanly possible to go through what she did it would have been impossible without God’s presence in her life.
