Thanksgiving is almost here and I am reminded to take a little bit of time and ponder over all that I am thankful for this year. There is a list a mile long although there have been years in the past when I could barely find one thing. I need to also take the time to be thankful to Review Wire Media and Chatty Patty’s Place for putting together this hop.
Family
My family is the one thing I am most grateful for this year. There have times in the past when we weren’t as close as we are now. In fact, I am not as close to my older brother as I would like to be. It is a relationship I am hoping to repair in the coming new year. Things happen and we can be headstrong. We let too much time go between the times we do speak and before you know it a year has gone by without so much as a word.
Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays for so many reasons (hello the food!) but one of the big ones is how much it focuses on family and friends. I love knowing that I am cooking for them and doing my little part to take care of them. There was a time when I didn’t think I would ever have a family of my own to take care of.
I came about that family in a rather unconventional way. I know to outsiders taking on children that aren’t biologically yours may seem odd. Taking on two that were products of your spouse’s affair may seem even more bizarre. I just knew that I needed to be the person to take care of them. I felt it as if God had spoken to my soul at the time.
Then you add in two senior citizens who most would have put into a home by now and that can make for a trying day. I promised my father I would always take care of my mother. I later promised her that as long as I was physically capable of taking care of her I would never put her into a home. Later when my uncle came to live with us I just added him in without thought.
I didn’t do any of it for recognition or accolades. It is just who I am at my core. Honestly they have all helped me as much as I have helped them in the last few years. Although I will admit there are times I can’t wait for the kids to be grown and out of the house. I plan on buying my own tiny home and living by myself. At least that is what I tell them.
Take the Time
As we get ready to spend time with family and friends take the time to think about what you are truly thankful for this year. Take the time to tell them how much your appreciate them and how much you love them. Also take the time to make memories and if possible capture those memories for a lifetime. I try to do that with my camera as often as I can.
