Moving is something that I both enjoyed and hated growing up. I enjoyed it because there was always the thrill of a new place but hated all the work that came with it. I learned that there was a lot of things that you need to know and do before moving. The first of these is to plan, plan, plan, and then plan a little more. I know that sounds like a lot of planning but trust me when I say you will be so glad that you did all that planning after you move.
First you need to determine if you will be moving yourself or if you will be hiring a company to do the move for you. There are federal regulations regarding moving from state to state but be sure to check you state moving regulations. These are important whether you are moving yourself or if you are hiring a company. You want to make sure that whomever you hire works within those regulations.
Now you need to determine how many boxes you are going to need and if you are going to purchase them or attempt to get free ones. You can always try for some free ones from your local grocery store but having your clothes in the same box that food was in might not be the most appealing thing. The other option as I said is to purchase some boxes and you can find them at many stores. Be sure you purchase plenty of tape, bubble wrap, and a couple of black markers so you can mark the boxes with what room they go into. When you get to your new place you want someone unloading the truck (if you are moving yourself) and someone setting up furniture and/or unpacking boxes. This will help the move go much smoother and get things into their place much quicker.
I live in a small Georgia town that you most likely have never heard of and I LOVE it! My house is more than full as I am a single mother of four & caregiver to my aging mother and uncle. Lover of all things Outlander. Goes to the beat of her own drum woman.

You don’t know how much I wish I had this information a few weeks ago for my son who just moved to his new place. It was a nightmare move and they are still in the middle of a disaster area trying to unpack.

These are really great tips. Honestly I hope I never need them as I really hate to move.

I am not as crazy about moving as I once was

Great post! There are just so many things to remember when moving. I really like the reminder to take important documents and valuables with you…I’ve accidentally packed documents before and it was such a pain trying to determine where they were and retrieve them!

I think we have all been there. I make a point of mailing copies of anything important to myself ahead of time so that it arrives like the day I get there or the next day just in case. I do the same thing when we travel because you just never know.

So true! The best part of moving was the new place. We moved out of state 3 times and every single time it was a disaster from my uncle packing the uhaul all wrong and dealing with the truck swaying side to side on the highway it was a nightmare! Then the last cross the country move we decided to mail some of our belongings only to have boxes come up missing and some of the boxes we did receive were torn into. Lesson learned! Its so important to plan!

When it comes to moving you can never plan enough.

These are very good tips. I dread moving. I didn’t know there were regulations for moving from one state to another. You can’t plan or check into things enough when moving, any effort ahead of time will pay off!

It was something that I learned as well Rosie. There is a lot to learn about moving that I think most people didn’t already know.

I have not had to move since 1988! I had to move so many years before that and it was hard. These are very good tips on what to do when moving, especially about putting a lot of valuable items with you.
Rita says
Wow Karen you have been in the same place a long time.

These are some great tips! We haven’t moved in 22 years, however, it looks like we may be moving in the next few months. I am not looking forward to it, began making my lists and planning, hoping it all goes smooth. 🙂
