We all had to start learning to cook somewhere right? I can remember the very first dish I made and let me tell you I thought I was a four star chef at the time. I was eight years old and my great aunt had all of kids over. Everyone was off doing something and she told me I needed to learn how to cook so I got a chair and got up at the stove to follow her directions.
I was a simple box of macaroni and cheese but for me at the time it was like she had handed me a million dollars. What she was giving me without realizing it was my love for cooking. If she and then later my grandmother hadn’t taken the time to allow me to play in their kitchens I wouldn’t have the confidence I have in the kitchen. I would only be able to make basic things. My mother, God love her, never wanted us kids to mess up her kitchen so we didn’t cook very much with her often. Although I do really times when we would.
How Was It?
Well it was mac and cheese and lets face it you really can’t mess that up too badly. It was good for the boxed stuff. It wouldn’t be until a few years later that I learned that you could make it from scratch and add in whatever sort of cheese that you wanted. Everyone enjoyed it but now I know just how not good for you it is. Yet that weird orange cheese still calls to me sometimes!

The first recipe I remember learning was Hershey’s Cocoa Chocolate Fudge—very simple. Later, as a teenager, I my brother forced me to make batches to keep him from telling on me to get me in trouble (the little blackmailer! lol.) It is so simple that I have it memorized and still make it sometimes on the spot when we crave something sweet.

The first dish I ever made was scrambled eggs with hashbrowns and bacon. I was 8 years old, but my Mom was near by to make sure everything was okay. I made this for my family for breakfast.

First thing I ever made was ribbon salad the Thanksgiving I turned 6. I still make it for Thanksgiving and so do all of my children

I think my first dish was scrambled eggs in the double boiler. My father is the one who showed me how to do it.

I’m still proud when I make a good box of mac n’ cheese…I’m not much of a cook. I do at least buy the whole grain noodles and now the “cheese sauce” is made a little better.

I didn’t really make an actual meal until maybe elementary or middle school. It was grilled salmon with a side salad. 🙂

My first recipe was from scratch mac and cheese when I got my own apartment. I think I made it 4 days out of 7 and I still like it.

We tried to make a rice and meat dish to “surprise” my parents. We also made an angel food cake. The cake turned out well, but the rest of dinner did not. My mom got so mad that we had wasted food that we ended up hiding the cake and eating it later. haha!

I remember making a pie for my grandmother. My older sister baked all the time, so I was clued in to baking, and she would have me help her, but mostly I recall doing the tons of dishes. I remember mostly about the pie is that after dinner they were joking that to slice the pie they needed a chainsaw!!!

I also cant remember what my first dish was I made. My Mom worked two jobs and didn’t have much time. I think it was maybe a recipe I cant even spell. It is a Czech/Russian dessert that uses yeast dough and she always made it at Christmas.

I know exactly what you mean about feeling like you a won a lottery the first time you make something. My first thing I made was Fish Sticks. Some things you never forget and your first dish is definitely one of them.
