Did you know that this week kicks off National Volunteer Week? Well it does and I am so thrilled to be a part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters Latino Recruitment Campaign. Mentoring is so important because we have all been touched in our lives by someone who showed we were more. That is why Big Brothers and Big Sisters Latino is so important. It gives us all a chance to help children at those critical stages in their lives.
Think back over your life and I bet you remember that one person who made a difference. Mine was a 5th grade teacher that taught I was more than I ever realized when he wrote a single sentence in my year book. I was always picked on about being so short and he rode me really hard all year. He pushed me, made me do work that was harder than what everyone else was doing and until the end of the year I never understood why. He wrote “Some of God greatest gifts this life come in small packages.” It was then that I realized he saw more in me than I saw in myself and I have spent my life thankful for that teacher.
20% of all the children that Big Brothers and Big Sisters serve are Latino but only 9% of the volunteers are. Because Latinos have such a strong heritage of volunteering in their neighborhoods and places of worship you have the power to help not just a single child but your whole community. Big Brothers and Big Sisters pair Bigs (adults) with Littles (kids) and the Bigs mentor and help the Littles. It truly is a great program where Latinos can make such a huge difference and whether you are Latino or not take some time to connect with Big Brothers and Big Sisters and find out how you too can be the positive force in the life of a child.

I live in a small Georgia town that you most likely have never heard of and I LOVE it! My house is more than full as I am a single mother of four & caregiver to my aging mother and uncle. Lover of all things Outlander. Goes to the beat of her own drum woman.

I think it’s a very worthwhile cause. I grew up with a single mother and would have liked having a “Big Sister” to mentor me.

I had a big sister growing up and it made a huge difference. I tried signing my son up, but the waiting list is quite long, he wasn’t very interested, which makes me sad.

This really is a great organization that helps so many kids. I would consider doing this if/when my son is grown.
