It’s very true, and sometimes unfortunate, to say that many people hold the impression that middle age is equal to stagnation. If you haven’t achieved something by middle age, the old impression goes, you probably never will. This isn’t true at all. People learn to drive for the first time in their fifties. Some people change their career path entirely after a long and storied work history.
You’re never too old unless you force yourself to accept that you are. Of course, even those of us who have responsibilities, such as children and other tasks we have to see to each day can find a way to add something new into their schedule if they’re realistic about time management and keep their expectations measured.
So, if you really do wish to open up more opportunities in life, you don’t deserve to feel that this is a silly endeavor. Actually, your intentions are far from silly. In this post, we’ll discuss why that is by providing three tips and techniques you can use for effectively managing your forward path, and seeing just what else may lie on the horizon.
Expanding On Prior Education
It might be that you already have the educated or skillset that may be needed to help you expand on your direction or specialzie further. For instance, you might find that to become a nursing doctor you could apply for a range of excellent online programs or in-person courses, which helps you move into the scholastic side of nursing, applying your experience for good and moving in a different direction. Many career paths may offer specialisms in this way, and are worth your time to experience.
Lateral Employment
You’d be surprised how much taking lateral employment can help catapult you into a new and more interesting direction, particularly if you have universal skills that could potentially be applied in a new situation. For instance, if you’ve spent time running events management, it could be that moving into a production role within a film production studio could be more than possible, as the skills are largely the same, and you may even interface with similar acts. Listing all of the lateral moves you could make (this may take creative thinking), can help you get out there and feel more able to accomplish something of worth, without limiting what you may apply for.
Goodwill & Reputation
You may not realize just how much goodwill and reputation you already have, and how that could be used to help you establish a better direction. For instance, it might be that thanks to your representation of a certain company, you’ve built up a list of excellent clients and relationships that you could use should you ever strike out alone. This often happens with chefs, for instance, as sometimes an entire brigade can follow a chef to a new kitchen when they make their journey, provided this doesn’t override their contracts.
With this advice, we hope you can feel more confident about opening up new opportunities in life.
I live in a small Georgia town that you most likely have never heard of and I LOVE it! My house is more than full as I am a single mother of four & caregiver to my aging mother and uncle. Lover of all things Outlander. Goes to the beat of her own drum woman.

Great post! As someone who returned to school, moving away from home and into a college dorm for the first time at the age of 47, I agree with you that it is never too late to make a change in your life.
