Your feet is one of the hardest working parts of your body. It carries your entire weight and it’s your primary way of getting from one point to another. But how often do you pamper them? Yahoo Lifestyle points out that it’s one of the most neglected parts of the body. But it doesn’t have to be. You don’t have to spend a lot of money pampering your feet, in fact, you can even do it at home. Here’s how:
Soak your feet in a foot bath — Wash your feet with soap and warm water before soaking it in a foot bath, especially if you’ve had a long day out. You want the dirt from the outside to come off your feet first. Then you can make a foot soak recipe made up of Epsom salt, body oil, essential oils of your choice, and warm or hot water. Soak your feet for 10 to 15 minutes or until you feel the soles of your feet are soft enough for scrubbing.
Give your feet a good scrub — Dead skin comes off of your feet everyday, but it’s necessary to give them a good scrub at least three times a week to keep them soft and healthy. According to Bustle, foot scrubs help combat cracked heels and remove stubborn dirt. Giving your feet regular exfoliation makes them soft and smooth, too. Pretty Me explains that exfoliation removes calluses and thick bits of skin. If left unscrubbed, they can reduce the effectiveness of any foot product that you want to use. Softening lotions and feet butter or moisturisers are more effective if they can penetrate deeper into the skin. Exfoliating helps get rid of unnecessary layers.
File dead skins away — Expert podiatrist Margaret Dabbs believes you need to use a foot file at least once a week. You also need to make sure you’ve dried your feet well before filing as it can be challenging to see where you need to file if your feet are wet. “Cracked feet can split in water which can be painful and lead to infection,” Dabbs said. “Always file hard areas such as big toes and heels in soft strokes towards the underneath of your foot. If you file upwards, you will be left with a ridge,” she added.
Clean your nails — Your nails are as important as the rest of your feet so make sure you clean them regularly. Clip and file each toenail, and buff the tops to ensure a smooth surface. It’s best to leave them without nail polish for at least a week so your nails can rest from the chemicals. Go to a professional nail technician at least once a month, too, so she can check for ingrown nails and callouses you were not able to remove.
Other things you can do for healthier feet include wearing the right size of footwear and using foot powder to prevent any fungus from growing. You also need to make sure you always bring feet wipes with you as they do a better job at cleaning your feet than baby wipes. We wrote about them in one of our blogs here on Rita Reviews and noted that apart from the fact that they smell great, they’re effective and easy to carry too.
