Most parents have done all of their traveling with kids over the summer, for us though we wait til fall to do most of our traveling because the weather is much nicer. We can ride with the windows down and enjoy the fresh air without a whole lot of fuss. However there really is so much to plan when you are traveling with kids. We are preparing for a four-hour car drive and the kids can get a bit fussy at times. So it really helps to be prepared for anything so below are a few of my tips for beginning to end!
Packing for the Kids: I pack each day’s outfit for the kids in a ziploc bag. That way all they have to do is grab and go. When I say each day I mean everything from diaper to hair clip. The outfit is put together and there is no fuss or muss. It doesn’t matter who is dressing that particular child that particular day because everything is ready for them. They get one outfit for each we will be gone (unless we are near a washer and dryer) and then a couple of extra “just in case” ones.
Diapers, Diapers, and More Diapers: I NEVER depend on where I am going to have the diapers we use. Have you ever been driving and there not be a store for miles? It is in those moments that you will need a diaper change I guarantee it. All the diapers (and wipes) we could possibly need are placed in the big tote and into the back of the car. doing it this way means I don’t have to go through the suitcase to get to a diaper or wipe, they are right on hand. If we are flying a ship a box load of diapers and wipes to wherever I am going.
Toys and Entertainment: A small box of toys (no small parts), books, and DVDs are placed in the backseat where Daniel can reach them and hand them out as needed. It saves us having to stop a lot. Each child has his or her own blanket, cup, bottle, or whatever makes them comfy. This cuts down on the fighting and no one is required to share.
Comfort is the Name of the Game: I dress the kids in comfy, loose clothing like sweat pants so they don’t feel bunched up and uncomfortable. Shoes are some that can easily be slid off if they want. I don’t do a whole lot with their hair either, keep it simple. They will most likely fall asleep and mess it up anyway. If they need to be dressed up for when we arrive, a quick stop at a rest stop and they are good to go.

I live in a small Georgia town that you most likely have never heard of and I LOVE it! My house is more than full as I am a single mother of four & caregiver to my aging mother and uncle. Lover of all things Outlander. Goes to the beat of her own drum woman.

You’re smart! we do all of our traveling during the summer. I think its great to go in the fall! We pack EXTRA clothes always you never know when an accident happens extra shoes, sock, undies, diapers, wipes, toys, crayons and coloring books.

I love how organized you are! When I worked in childcare it always amazed me how UNorganized some people were. It was a wonder they could even get their kids to preschool on time…well most of the time they were late! Great tips you’ve shared.

When i was a little gal, I couldn’t do pampers because I had such sensative skin! I think the earliest my parents ever traveled with me was when i was 2.. I was always so happy go lucky and loved to sleep(well that sounds like now..esp the sleep lol)and OMG look at those tiny tiny crocs!

When my friends travel with little ones, I always wonder how they do it. I don’t have any kids of my own, so I don’t have to deal with it. But my one friend says she does it the simple way – she doesn’t! :/
In all seriousness though, I commend anyone who can handle being in the car with a few little ones! I barely have patience to be in a car for more than 20 minutes with adults! 🙂

I would say bring as many gadgets, books and toys as you can manage to carry. This way your kids can stay entertained.

I love the outfit bag tip. It’s so much easier to have everything bagged up, and not be rummaging through the suitcase for socks or other random items.

Great tip on the loose comfy clothes. When my kids were little I always made sure I kept an emergency outfit in their bag and I also kept their meds in my purse in case our luggage got lost.
