Preventive Healthcare Tips for the Whole Family

Feb 18, 2018 | Rita

The dreaded seasonal illnesses that always pop up during the winter-spring months can quickly put a pin in your family’s weekend plans. Dealing with symptoms of the cold and flu can wreak havoc on your household when you’d all rather be making homemade slime together (I’m kidding).

Understandably, it can be a pain trying to keep up with regular doctor check-ups, taking daily vitamins, getting your flu shots, and overall the preventive measures that keep you and your family healthy all year round. However, as experts at Bradley University explain, during the typical flu season — October through January — the severity of flu season is unpredictable, but it is always extremely contagious. This means a lot of opportunities for your family to catch and suffer through the flu and cold season. It’s also important to keep in mind that influenza can be deadly in some cases.

By encouraging and implementing preventative health care options, you and your family can spend more time doing the things you love (homemade slime, anyone?) and less time trapped and miserable in bed or the bathroom. parra medical centre priority is on delivering the best possible professional and interpersonal service.

If you didn’t know already, flu shots are crucial for young children and the elderly. However, It’s arguably easier for you to get your children in for a flu shot than say, your grandfather. It can be quite the challenge setting aside time to drive out, pick up, and bring a grandparent or elderly adult back home after their flu shot. Be that as it may, transportation, according to University of Cincinnati, is one of the main barriers elderly face in regards to accessible healthcare.

It goes without saying that you have a busy schedule of your own to keep up with, it can feel as though you hardly have time to take care of yourself. Unfortunately, flu shots can’t be given digitally — yet —  so it’s important to provide your assistance when you can! There is also some hope for the future of healthcare as the world of telehealth grows. Even if your grandparent, parent, or elderly neighbor are not the most tech savvy, it’d be worth taking the time to connect them to their healthcare provider via phone or online as that will likely save you a lot time and frustration while also keeping their important access to healthcare open.

It’s also beneficial to stay in the loop of what is and isn’t covered by your medical insurance provider. Paying for flu shots and other vaccinations can get really expensive, fast. While some places offer flu shots for free, others will charge you, and it’s important to know how you’re covered and how you should expect to pay afterwards — especially if it’s an emergency visit for a flu shot.

Beyond flu season, general preventive health measures should be a priority for you and your partner in order to protect yourself from common illnesses. When you’re busy dealing with the responsibilities of life, time can fly by, and perhaps the only time you think to visit a doctor is when something is wrong. This can be a serious, harmful habit, especially as you and your partner age.

As such, start embracing the annual physical from your family physician. Screenings are crucial for catching life changing problems early on. Most heart disease and cancers can be treated successfully if caught early enough. You should also be performing self-exams on yourself in between physical exams; women should self-examine their breasts for signs of cancer and men should be checking for any warning signs of testicular cancer. All these fairly simple practices can help keep you and your family from experiencing stressful and painful situations in the future.

As the world of healthcare continues evolving and expanding it can make us all feel invincible. Of course, we’re not, so it’s important to maintain healthy habits and make more healthy choices throughout our day-to-day lives. Now, who’s ready to make some homemade slime?
