Health 101: Protect Yourself From These Common Illnesses

Jan 31, 2017 | Rita

No one wants to be ill. After all, it can make you feel terrible and could cause you to take a lot of time off work. So there is no wonder that we all try our utmost to stay as healthy as possible all the time. Thankfully, there is plenty that you can do to lower your risk of some of the most common health conditions. Here’s how.

Diabetes

Diabetes is a big problem these days, and the numbers of patients suffering from this disease continue to grow year on year. There are two types of diabetes, but type 2 is the biggest problem facing our country right now. And that’s because an unhealthy lifestyle can cause it. There is plenty that you can do to make sure your risk of this condition reduces. For instance, if you change your diet and cut down on salt and sugar, you will notice a big difference in your health. Regular exercise and limiting your alcohol intake can also help to reduce your risk of diabetes.

Heart Conditions

If you have a high level of cholesterol or high blood pressure, you will be putting yourself at risk of heart disease. But don’t worry; there are numerous ways you can lower your cholesterol levels and blood pressure. Quitting smoking can make a big difference, as can reducing your daily intake of fats and refined sugars. Watching your stress levels can also help you fight against heart disease. Make sure you aren’t taking on too much work in the office as high levels of stress are closely linked to heart attacks and other life-threatening heart conditions.

Asbestos-Related Illnesses

People who work in the building and construction industries need to watch out for asbestos. This is a substance that was once used in the construction of various buildings. However, it was discovered to be highly toxic just a few decades ago. Since then, it has been banned, but construction workers still come into contact with it when working in old buildings. If you think that you have developed an illness after being exposed to asbestos at work, you should think about seeking professional legal representation for cases involving mesothelioma.

Migraines

Migraines are extremely strong headaches that can affect the sufferer for days. One of the best ways to deal with migraines is to recognize what triggers them and to try to prevent them from developing. Next time you suffer from an attack, it is important that you note down the specific situation so that you can try to identify triggers. That way, you can then try and stay away from things that bring on a migraine. Many people also swear by a few natural remedies as well. For example, lots of migraine sufferers say that they benefit from regular acupuncture sessions.

Hopefully, you will now be able to help your family prevent some of these very common illnesses and ailments. In general, though, it is important to remember just how useful a healthy diet and regular exercise can be. These are great tools that can help your body stay in top health.

I have high blood pressure. I managed to quit smoking two years ago and have changed my diet but I can’t seem to get my high blood pressure under control without medication.

Oh these are all such great tips! My brother was diagnosed really early in life with Type 1 Diabetes, and my mother got Type 2 about 10 years ago. She has been able to get hers under control without medication. Diet and exercise play such an important part!
