If you don’t already know our family enjoys getting together and hiking. We haven’t done it as much lately because I haven’t been able to. In fact, I have had to start like a beginner again. It sucks because we have a big hike planned for next year we had to cancel but it is soemthing I am striving to return to. One of the things that is always important is bring food or snacks when hiking. Although that can be a pain because you have to carry them. That is why when RightOnTrek ask me to check them out I said yes immediately.
There is a lot to love about RightOnTrek. First is that they are not only available online but are in an increasing number of stores nationwide. Their headquarters is near Glacier National Park, Montana. One of my family’s favorite places. The meals are not your standard dehydrate or MRE meals either. That is something I really enjoyed. As a military brat MREs were something we had often when hiking. I hate them with a passion (okay the peanut butter is pretty awesome!)
RightOnTrek has a highly selective curation process and they test several different sources for each ingredient. Then they make sure to choose ingredients that are free of preservatives, organic whenever possible, and most of all the ones that taste the best. This is important when hiking. Especially for the longer hikes. You don’t want a lot of sugary or processed foods to make you feel sluggish.
We were just taking a short hike which meant a smaller bag. The meals were lightweight and my nephew carried them in his bag with no problem. That left the water for the adults to carry along with kids carrying their own bottle of water. Weight in your backpack means so much when you are hiking. Too much and you will be give out before you barely get started. Not enough packed and you will be hungry and thirsty. It is all a balancing act. One that RightOnTrek has mastered beautifully.
For breakfast we had the Blueberry Bliss Granola with Yogurt. This feeds one, although one of the twins enjoyed it with me. It was good. You just add water and you have a hearty breakfast to get your day started on the trial. I just added it to a small container that I always carry with me and then added the water to that. It is just easier when the little ones are with us. If it was just adults, I would have added it straight to the bag and ate it that way.
Dinner for my nephew was a Bechamel Style Mac and Cheese that served two. I say two but my nephew ate the whole package by herself. We just boiled some water, added the noddle, boiled for a couple of minutes, and then added the cheese mixture. There was a spice packet that he could have added but chose not to. He said it was really good.
The twins and I enjoyed the Broccoli Beef Stroganoff for dinner. It was so good! Again, we boiled water, added the the broccoli, beef, and mushrooms, cooked it for a while. Then we added the powder stirred, and cover for a few minutes. After that we had a hearty meal that filled us up and was more than perfect for the trail.
We also received a packet that has some cheese sticks, honey, banana chips, walnuts, and condiments inside. It was all the little things needed to make meals more homestyle while hiking.
All in all the RightOnTrek meals were more than enough for us for our short hike. I will say the portion sizes here surprised me the most. When I say it was enough for 2 people I mean it. RightOnTrek meals offer 1, 2, and 4 person sizes at 500 to 600 calories per dinner serving. They also don’t have the excessive sodium found in
other meals. That was perfect for me as I can’t have over a limited sodium amount per day or I end up in the hospital. They also offer meals for dietary needs such as vegetarian, vegan, Keto, no-gluten, and non-dairy.
