Repurpose Compostables

Mar 22, 2012 | Rita

It never fails! In the midst of trying to go green and use more products that I wash and reuse there comes a moment or two when one of us just needs to use a one time use product. So what do you do? Well there is a company that is helping solve that dilemma. It is  Repurpose Compostables. Repurpose Compostables was started in  2009 when a group of young environmentalists entrepenuers began looking for quality solutions to the problem of single use petroleum based plastic products.

Repurpose was born with its mission to replace all single use disposable plastics with high quality, innovative, plant based alternatives. Repurpose makes products from plants, not petroleum, using Ingeo™ resin and meet ASTM 6400 compostability standards.

Repurpose products are now available to consumers and to businesses allowing everyone the opportunity to lessen their dependence on oil, lower their carbon footprint, and find non-toxic, safe alternatives to plastic.

I was sent a box of their Insulated Hot Cups to try out. These are perfect for hubby because when he is away from home working he either forgets his cup at the job site or forgets to wash it. With these he uses them and throws them out and doesn’t have to worry.  Here is what Repurpose Compostables says about their cups:

keeps hot beverages warmer longer, and prevents heat from escaping the cup while protecting the user from burning their hands without the use of sleeves, “jackets” or double-cupping! Traditional insulated cups are made by adding additional layers of paper, but the Repurpose insulated hot cup does the same, better, with our patented insulation material on a single wall cup. Our insulated cup is also chlorine free and uses soy-based inks. Best of all the product generates less CO2 than a traditional paper cup when produced due to it’s Ingeo lining, and can be composted in 90 days in a commercial composter, offering the greenest possible alternative to Styrofoam and all other non-compostable insulated cups

Our thoughts are these are some GREAT cups! Edgar used them with no trouble.  They kept his coffee hot and he didn’t bur his hands. I used some as well and I will tell you I love the lids because I could stick a straw in there and sip my coffee without worrying about the coffee spilling out. I will tell that they work just as well for cold drinks as well. The kids loved the idea that they could have a “grown-up” cup as they put it.

You can purchase Repurpose Compostables at retailers such as Amazon and Bed, Bath and Beyond.
