I don’t about y’all but we hike a lot and one of the things I struggle with when we are off on an adventure is meals. They tend to be the same thing because it is hard to pack bulky stuff. not to mention if it is the kids and I that means I’m carrying most of the items. That is where RightOnTrek comes in and I will tell you they are simply amazing. They put together a meal pack for you that is easy to carry and packed full of everything you need to have amazing meal on the trail.
If you hike then you already know how difficult it can be carry all the food you need along with all of your gear. I remember years ago (when I was younger and far more fitter) I hiked part of the Appalachia Trail and I will tell you I wish I had these back then. I couldn’t carry as much as each of the RightOnTrek days offers. I had to have food sent ahead of me so I could resupply at various points along the trail. I did end up eating way more peanut butter and protein bars than I wanted to because they were far easier to carry. I did get to select items that would be in each day. They gave me choices which made them so perfect in my opinion.
I wanted to break down each of the days for you can you could see what all is included. I will say that when I went on on the trail with these it was a short weekend hike and ended up putting these is a small crossbody bag. My friend was using my hiking backpack and I didn’t have another on hand. I LOVE that RightOnTrek remind you to gather your trash and to use the outer bag to keep it all together. This way you don’t litter or cause animals to follow you for snacks.
You get breakfast, lunch, dinner, and some snacks. I know you’re thinking that doesn’t look like all of that. It is. There was oatmeal for breakfast, a protein bar for lunch, and then mac and cheese for dinner. I also got hot cocoa and coffee to drink. I don’t always keep to the breakfast, lunch, and dinner meal times or plans when I am hiking. I eat when I am hungry and then snack when I feel I need it. Now, the chocolate depends on wear I am hiking. In the summer in the south and you can forget the chocolate because that will be a mess. It will melt and make everything gross.
Tillamook cheese is something we have just discovered and I could not have been happier about this being included in my day of meals. These are the perfect snacks for the afternoon and help keep me going. Like I said we love these at the moment.
Day 2 and we have another large package of meals for the day. We also get another reminder to not litter and gather our garbage up. While this one looks much fuller than the first one they do have the same amount of food in them.
The snacks and desserts in this one rocked. I had never had an oatcake before and was surprised that I liked it as much as I did. Again the chocolate most likely wouldn’t work on a really hot day. I do carry a small insulated bag in my backpack that I put an ice pack in but it will only hold so much and I use insulin so that means keep it cool. Hot days hiking and insulin don’t go hand in hand.
I am not a big coffee drinker anymore but I will say I was intrigued enough by this one to give it a go. I enjoyed it and on a cold morning on the trails this would be beyond perfect.
They even provided condiments for both days in their own pack. that helped. Not having to search for them or having them fall out of the day package after opening it. Lets face it that is one of the things that happens a lot.
NOT JUST HIKING
I can see us using RightOnTrek for meals beyond just when we are hiking. We enjoy going out in the Jeep a lot and I think these would be perfect for those days when we are out on the Jeep trails for a week or more. Normally, we pack coolers and other food items that will allow us to feed ourselves while we are out. There was one year in the snow where we had five coolers and all looked crazy while we making sandwiches and trying to get everyone fed. These meals would make those moments much easier.
All in all I was impressed with RightOnTrek Meals. They just blew me away with how well they are packaged together. They give you three meals a day without weighing you down. If you hike you know how important this is. Hiking is one of the activities that the kids can do with me without it being a big issue. That being said, it does mean I carry more so anything that will let me feed us without me having to wear a backpack that weighs a ton is important.
What sort of meals do you take on the trail with you? If you don’t hike what activity could you use the RightOnTrek meals for? Please let us know in the comments.
