One of the things that I have learned is that you are never too old to learn something new. That is why I started a class for this summer. It actually already began and I could not be happier with it. It is a design class. My goal is to improve some of my design skills here on the blogs and in my assistant job that I have.
I have already begun to get something out of the class itself. One of the biggest things that we recently studied was color theory and there was so much I didn’t know. Holy goodness! I never thought about color being as important as it is. That class alone got me thinking about so much.
Colors says so much and finding the right combination isn’t always easy. In fact, I learned that lesson several times over. There have been moments when colors seem to work, in my head at least, only to look awful when I put them together on the blog. My instructor said to select a color palette and then walk away from it for a while.
That seems to be her motto on several aspects. To walk away and allow yourself time to reflect on things. When you come back if they are still on your list of likes narrow that list down to four then two and then one. Of course walk away again and if you still are loving it when you come back you have your palette.
Colors are just one aspect though. The biggest eye opener for me was the Design Brief. Taking the time to learn what a design brief was and sitting down to do it has helped me more than anything. It is pretty much the vision of what a client will see for their company design and brand.
We have a project where we are designing a brand for a company we made up. Since I already have a company, Rita Reviews, in a sense I am using it. Sitting down and completing a design brief gave me a direction and vision of what I want. It helped me with my goals.
I know this skill is going to be one I use time and time again. I promise that I will share my journey through this course with y’all. As I learn things or change things (cause you know I will as I go) I will talk about what I am doing. I plan on having a giveaway when I have completed the class as well.
Are you taking any classes this summer? Let us know in the comments below.
I live in a small Georgia town that you most likely have never heard of and I LOVE it! My house is more than full as I am a single mother of four & caregiver to my aging mother and uncle. Lover of all things Outlander. Goes to the beat of her own drum woman.

I am a strong believer that it is never too late to learn something new, I graduate in just a couple of weeks with a new degree and start summer school next week to begin my next degree program. A design class sounds like fun, might look into one!

I would love to take a class this summer in changing patterns and sewing. My daughter is a very tough fit and i’d really like to know how better sew for her.

I agree, theres always time to learn something new – thanks for the reminder! after almost 30 years in the workforce, i took the leap of faith and went for additional training and certification – it was tough at my age and as a single mom, but it paid off and now i wouldnt be happier with my new job!
