Summer is fast approaching and that usually means the kids running around wondering what they are going to do all day. Since we homeschool I try to do educational things but lets be honest, the last thing they want is me making them do anything that involves learning. This year however we have a plan that involves a wonderful challenge from Brain Chase that will not only be educational (without me nagging) but will be full of exploration and full.
What is Brain Chase?
Well, Brain Chase is a 5-week online summer learning challenge for kids in grades 2nd through 8th in the United States, Canada and Mexico. We love the Mexico part because that means Victoria can take part when she is in Mexcio this summer. It is a massive global treasure hunt powered by reading, writing and math challenges completed by kids. This challenge offers kids a learning adventure that is fun, personalized, and motivating. If all of that isn’t enough Brain Chase provides a $10,000 scholarship and trophy to one “winner”. What kid wouldn’t want that?
How does Brain Chase work?
During a five week period that starts on June 22, 2015, Brain Chase encourages kid adventurers through structured challenges using reading and math websites and writing exercises. The exercises are based on their individualized academic strengths and levels with students receiving feedback on their writing from credentialed teachers and parents will receive weekly progress reports. As they progress through each challenge they will have access to original animated videos loaded with hidden puzzles and clues in addition to receiving three adventure tools that will be used to solve special bonus challenges. Each student has the chance to win the global treasure hunt that ends in a golden trophy containing the key to a safe deposit box holding a $10,000 scholarship.
Participate in 2015 Brain Chase Challenge
The 2015 Brain Chase challenge is to find the Sunstone of Cortés, a mysterious calendar stolen from the Aztec empire by Hernan Cortés in the 1500s. Kids join Mae Merriweather, her brother Max, athletic Sean Drake, and former nemesis Savannah Bryce to find the fictional Sunstone of Cortés… and the real one!
1. Start the chase
At 9 a.m. ET on Monday, June 22, 2015, Brain Chase: The Sunstone of Cortés begins. Adventurers log in to watch the first animated webisode and meet Mae Merriweather, the star of the show. They then dive into their first week of learning challenges. The “Dashboard” – tracks each student’s progress as they journey through the 5-week challenge.
2. Unlock the adventure
Each week, adventurers have four tasks: read for 15 minutes per day, write one journal entry, earn 10,000 points on Khan Academy and do one bonus challenge. Once they are done they unlock the next webisode –which contains hidden pictures, numbers, and riddles all of which is to help them guess the treasure’s location.
3. Follow the story
Students will follow Mae Merriweather and her friends from the Grayson Academy of Antiquities on the trail towards the mysterious Sunstone of Cortés. Adventurers will be inspired as they go on a virtual adventure to the Himalayas, dive off the coast of Greece and solve riddles.
4. Find the buried treasure
The hunt for the Sunstone isn’t just fiction – there is a real golden Sunstone of Cortés and $10,000 buried somewhere on Earth. Every 24 hours, adventurers can log in to enter their guess of the treasure’s location. The first adventurer to guess the location within a two-mile radius will travel with their family to the actual treasure site to claim the gold.

The challenge is meant to be flexible so that kids can catch up after a trip or camp. The only rule really is that there is no skipping ahead. Animations and video clues are not until a new week begins.

Wow, what a cool way to encourage summer learning! I am starting to think of ways to keep my rising third grader on track already. I’m thinking about ways to support reading specifically, but I love the sense of fun and adventure they built into this challenge. The chance to win the treasure is great motivation, too!
