Sure Signs Your Business Tech Needs An Upgrade

Regardless of what you sell or how you operate within your company, you probably have one thing in common with all the other businesses out there – you’re entirely reliant on tech. From the systems you use to the devices on which your employees access them, these handy pieces of kit probably played a large role in helping you to grow and, importantly, reach global customers.

This is why most modern companies have a pretty sizable tech budget. Unfortunately, experts state that even the most major tech expenses are unlikely to last for longer than five or so years. After that point, it’ll need to be out with old tech and in with new, probably more expensive models.

Luckily, getting rid of old company tech has never been easier thanks to electronic recycling services that take care of everything from ethical laptop disposal to data destruction for you. But you still won’t want to get rid of old tech until you really have to. That’s why we’ve put together a list of sure signs that it’s time for an upgrade.

# 1 – A Question of Productivity

Technology is on hand to boost workplace productivity, which is why you probably won’t be surprised to hear that lost productivity is the first sign that tech upgrades are on your horizon.

Issues, including slow systems and outdated, poorly performing software can all cost employees a great deal of time. In fact, even just half an hour of lost buffering time each day can result in roughly seven lost hours each month. And that’s for every single employee!

Lucky for you, this is a problem that tends to creep up quite slowly. But if employees are regularly complaining about unnecessary tech-based delays, then you might want to sit up and start preparing.

# 2 – Cybersecurity Conundrums

Any business that uses technology needs to be poised against cybersecurity risks like phishing and malware, any of which can lead to catastrophic data breaches. Luckily, there is plenty of protective software out there, which you can and should utilize to keep even multiple workplace devices safe.

But it doesn’t take a genius to work out that cybersecurity risks are constantly evolving to overcome and outsmart these systems. And, if you’re using outdated devices, then sizable cyber breaches probably won’t be far behind.

If you’re no longer able to update your current security systems or keep on top of cutting-edge protections like encryption and multi-factor authentication, then let this be your sign to update your company tech in the coming year.

# 3 – Ever-Creeping Maintenance Costs

Outdated tech gets very old very quickly, meaning that it will inevitably require more regular maintenance, which may include system cleanups, replacement parts, and seemingly endless repairs. These aren’t cheap, and the fact that they typically require tech professionals means that you may struggle to keep your business financially strong and keep old tech up and running.

Of course, replacing an entire company’s worth of tech isn’t cheap either, especially when it comes to specific devices. But it’s worth asking how much you’re actually paying on tech maintenance each year. If that number outstrips the amount you’d pay to upgrade (which it does in a surprising number of cases), then it’s probably time to cut your losses and invest.

# 4 – Finally, Functionality

If you’re still unsure whether your tech needs to change, consider functionality at large. Are you experiencing long periods of downtime? Are outdated systems limiting your productivity? These are sure signs that your old tech simply isn’t functioning well enough to help you anymore. And, if it isn’t helping, then it’ll be fast on its way to becoming a hindrance.

Downtime is a functionality issue with particularly fatal consequences, which can result in reputational damage, lost custom, and yet more of those cybersecurity risks that we’ve already mentioned. Older tech can also become generally unfunctional by losing compatibility with the latest system upgrades, which can again pose significant security and operational risks.

So, if your team spends more time fighting with failing tech than using it to actually do their jobs, ask yourself – why don’t you just upgrade already?

Conclusion

Upgrading technology company-wide isn’t an easy task, and it’s something you’re probably keen to avoid at all costs. In reality, though, there will always come a time when your current systems simply aren’t serving you anymore. If you notice these warning signs, then seek ethical modes of disposal and get to work building brand new tech into your operations.
