In an increasingly globalized world, the importance of being able to communicate as such can’t be understated. Indeed, there are some 6,000 languages on this planet, so sooner or later we’re all likely going to need to get by outside of English. Especially travelers. Those who spend a good deal of time traversing the globe likely have untold amounts of stories regarding being lost in translation in airports, cafes, municipal offices and more. The trick to avoiding these frustrating episodes lies in the pre-planning, and that means getting the appropriate language software.
Now, experts often recommend that comprehensive language software be used in conjunction with immersive classes before the trip even begins. But those defined by their wanderlust, who like to hop a plane at the drop of a hat, likely don’t have that kind of time. To this end, here are some good web-based options for quickly gleaning the nuts and bolts of other languages.
Rocket Languages Premium
This option earned an Editor’s Choice award from PCMag for best language software. And after going over the system, it’s hard to argue with that accolade. Rocket’s mission statement is to set the users off as quickly as possible and have them speaking the language by the end of the first lesson. It also aims to reduce overall learn times by 50% when compared to other programs. There are a number of languages on hand, from Spanish to Arabic, and users can even learn sign language. There’s a six-day free trial period on offer, but after that travelers are going to need to shell out $99.00 for the entire program.
Mango Passport
Known for its intuitive interface and clean design, this option offers 16 different languages plus relevant tips for travelers, such as cultural info. The program focuses on the kinds of phrases and vocabulary that are a necessity when traveling in foreign lands. Its general ease of use comes from the flashcard-style click-through exercises, which makes learning a breeze. It’s certainly a bare-bones program that doesn’t come with all the bells and whistles of a Rosetta Stone, but for basic grammar and vocab, this $150.00 bit of software gets the job done.
Tell Me More
This is a comprehensive language-learning system that offers everything from virtual classrooms to expert-penned White Papers. It also has a program focusing on travelers. Each of the multiple languages on offer can be ordered specifically for travelers and focuses on basics like ordering in restaurants and asking for directions. Those who happen to be traveling to the U.S. from another country can take advantage of its various ESL programs as well. Overall, there are a number of plans on offer in a wide variety of price ranges. However, a basic one-month option will run $99.00. More complex formats can cost $500.00 or more.
It’s true that the only way to learn another language fluently is through immersion. However, the above options should give the typical traveler all the tools he or she needs to ensure a successful vacation, business trip or globetrotting adventure.

I live in a small Georgia town that you most likely have never heard of and I LOVE it! My house is more than full as I am a single mother of four & caregiver to my aging mother and uncle. Lover of all things Outlander. Goes to the beat of her own drum woman.

I purchased Living Language Platinum Spanish at a deep discount (GMA Steals n Deals I think) and it is immersion. There’s a mobile app, and plenty of books too (I still like books). Looking forward to using it.

I would love to learn a new language. I would love to be able to speak it and have it flow easy. My daughter is amazing at Spanish. I think it;s just easier for some people then others.

My hubby’s side of the family all speaks fluent Spanish. I am by no means fluent, heck I am an nowhere near it. I would love to learn but have yet to find a software that I can afford. These are some great ones and will keep them in mind! Thanks for the heads up about them. PS: Had no idea there were over 6,000 languages!!
