The Benefits of Becoming a Teacher

Sep 02, 2022 | Rita

The Benefits of Becoming a Teacher

When we look back on our time at school, we all have that favorite teacher who has effectively managed to change our lives for the better. Who knows, maybe that special teacher for somebody else could be you? Are you currently considering becoming a teacher but still aren’t sure? This article will discuss some of the major benefits of teaching and why you should consider pursuing this rewarding career.

What Does It Take to Become a Teacher?

Before you decide whether or not you would like to pursue becoming a teacher, you may well be wondering what doing so would actually involve. Firstly, you will need to have the right qualifications; this usually involves going to university and obtaining a degree. If you are doing this, make sure you research colleges and choose an appropriate program.

You may also need to consider higher postgraduate education if you wish to advance your career in the teaching sector. Generally, a Master of Teaching (MAT) or a Master of Education (MED) are both popular routes to go down for those who want to work up the career ladder in the education field. If you’re one of those people, it will be worth weighing up a MED vs MAT degree in order to figure out which qualification will benefit your professional path and take it to greater heights.

Of course, teaching and working in the education field aren’t just about qualifications; the role also requires certain skills and traits that don’t necessarily come in degree form. There are a number of different characteristics that teachers need to have, which include:

  • Patience
  • Good attention to detail
  • Good teamwork skills
  • Solid communication
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Excellent (and quick) problem-solving abilities
  • Compassion

The Benefits

It’s clear that becoming a teacher isn’t easy, and you need to be properly qualified beforehand – so what are the benefits of putting in all of that work?

1. It’s a Rewarding Career

There is no getting away from the fact that teaching is one of the most rewarding jobs out there. Within your job, you get the chance to inspire the next generation. You will be the spark that lights their passion for a given subject and will help them pursue that career in their future.

Ask any teacher, and they will tell you that there is no feeling out there quite like the sensation of when a child finally understands something that they’ve been struggling with. If you are responsible for that feeling, you can only imagine how rewarding that must be. Yes, teaching is a massive responsibility, but when it all falls into place, you realize how important a career it is.

2. Variety

Do you hate the same old nine to five, sitting behind a desk and churning out the same piece of work every single day? If you become a teacher, then you can guarantee you won’t have to put up with this. Every day you will be teaching new things, and every single day you will be faced with a number of different challenges as well. You’ll never be bored in your role as a teacher – that’s for sure.

3. Longer Holidays

When you work as a teacher, it can often involve starting early and finishing late to plan lessons and review assignments. That being said, you will benefit from this hard work thanks to the long holidays you will get.

You can take advantage of these long holidays and get yourself somewhere sunny for a couple of weeks, reveling in your free time, particularly during summer break and the Christmas period. Not only that, but if you’re a parent yourself, you will have plenty of time to spend with your kids when they’re off school during the holidays.
