About the Book

More than fourteen years of psychological turmoil have left Honey and Wally Barnes emotionally exhausted. Their marriage, once vibrant, is a wasteland devoid of communion. In The Old Couple and the Little Dog, Honey is magnetically drawn to a Chihuahua puppy. She brings the pup home. The puppy charms Wally almost instantly.

Although independent from each other for years, they begin to work as a couple towards a common goal of Chi Chis care and happiness. In a sub-agenda, Honey is determined Chi Chi is to be loved by everyone and can do everything the big dogs do. She becomes frenetic in Chi Chis training; the two become inseparable. As a threesome, they romp through Columbus, Florida, and France for almost sixteen years. Their experiences are funny and embarrassing; sometimes their encounters are scary; but always, the action has Chi Chi in the center. Honey and Wally’s mutual devotion to Chi Chi allows her to pick up the torn fragments from their past solid marriage and stitch it into a whole and sturdy piece again.

My Thoughts

I should first say that the author, honey B. Barnes has since writing this book passes away. I only ever communicated with Honey through email and she was a very lovey woman. That said this is a wonderful book!  Chi Chi, the little dog, is simply wonderful and I truly love how the care and love of Chi Chi helps Honey and Wally remember their love and commitment to one another. Honey and Wally have gone through so much, which is something I can relate to at the moment. When her son, Chip, finally overdoses after a long illness Honey’s life takes a downward spiral. Everything that has happened has taken its toll on Honey and Wally. Dinner with a friend and a visit to the pet shop is just what Honey thinks she needs to fill her loneliness. It ends up being the best decision she ever made!

This sounds like such a sweet story. After the kids are grown and gone onto their own lives, something changes. This book sounds likea wonderful story of that change.
