I told you earlier about mine and Charlie’s sad little Christmas the year our father was sick and dying. Now let me tell you about the first time he and I made a turkey. It too was for Christmas dinner and it was the second year after our father had passed away. The first year we had lots of help from everyone because we had wanted to make sure Ma had the best holidays since Daddy was gone.
The second year it was just me, Ma, and Charlie or it was gonna be except Ma decided to go and visit our sister that morning. So there was Charlie and I stuck with a turkey in the oven and no clue what to do. MA said the little red button would pop out and all we had to do was take it out of the oven. Sound easy enough, right? WRONG!! First of all no one told us we the little red button was located so we had to look for that sucker. Secondly we didn’t realize that a turkey was not only heavy but if cooked correctly it would fall right off the bones.
So we find the red button, it has popped out and now all we have to do is take it out of the oven. Since it was heavy we manged to drop the pan with it in it. The good news is that the turkey didn’t hit the floor (yet) but it instead hit the oven door. Okay…no worries! We each grab a side of turkey which proceeds to begin falling off the bones and then we manage to slip in the turkey juice and grease from the fan that hit the floor the first time. That’s when the turkey hits the floor only to be grabbed up and hurdled into the sink.
Charlie’s response to all of this (after we quit laughing cause face it..it was funny) is that it was only on the floor for a second and no one would know. I agreed because I was hungry and we had already gone though all of the trouble. Charlie begins rinsing off the turkey in the sink while I clean up the floor. Once everything is clean we begin to pull apart the turkey putting it on the plate. While we are doing that a chunk of turkey lands on my shoulder. We look up and there is turkey on the ceiling! Don’t ask because we don’t know at what point it hit the ceiling! However to this day we both agree……BEST TURKEY EVER!!
I live in a small Georgia town that you most likely have never heard of and I LOVE it! My house is more than full as I am a single mother of four & caregiver to my aging mother and uncle. Lover of all things Outlander. Goes to the beat of her own drum woman.

That’s great that you and Charlie were able to laugh about it and make the most of that moment. That’s really a hard thing to do while you’re in the moment. What a great memory the two of you made.
