How many of you have gone through the whole experience of changing your childrens beds from toddler beds to big kids beds? It is such a nightmare isn’t it? I didn’t realize how much importance was actually placed on the bed until I was involved in helping my sister in-law. Remember my older children are my step children so they were already in big beds when hubby and I married so I didn’t have to go through the search.
Reese was ready to get out of his little bed and a deal was made that if he got a big boy bed then he would have to sleep in it every night or lose it. So the search began, you would think that a simple twin bed would do the trick. The problem is that when you get a twin bed for a small child you run the risk of having to buy a larger one a few years done the line because they have gotten so big. So I suggested a queen size bed and I wish you could have all seen the look on that child’s face. It was like “What do mean a QUEEN bed? I am a boy!”
Well a king size bed is just too big! You wouldn’t be able to see him in the middle of it. So it was decided that he would need a bunk bed. That way there would be a bed for him to sleep in and then a bed if he had overnight guests, etc. At least that is what would make sense to me but he had other plans. His bed was actually custom mad for him and his dad stained it so it was the perfect color. Reese felt that he didn’t really need two beds in his room so he sleep son the top bunk and then has all the space underneath for his toys and other adventures.
I know, I know this makes no sense to me either but hey what can I do about it? I remember having to share a bunk bed with my sister. What a nightmare that was so I honestly can’t blame Reese for not wanting anyone else underneath him while he sleeps. There were plenty of nights I felt like choking my sister because she was always pushing on mattress. She thought it was funny and I just wanted to sleep!

I never had bunk beds growing up but my sister and I shared a room. It was a challenge at times!

My boys are in twin beds 🙂 I did not think we had enough room for queen beds and I think they’ll make a mess of them by the time they outgrow them anyways 🙂 Hopefully we’ll have a bigger house by then 🙂

My older daughter freaked out when she moved from a toddler bed to a twin, but we worked out that she was really just worried that her baby sister was “replacing” her. We lucked out with our youngest though – we recently moved the girls into bunk beds and it was a totally seamless transition for both. Of course, we got them a super awesome tent bunk bed with purple and pink playhouse curtains. What little girl wouldn’t want to sleep in that?

My first child had a pretty easy time with a big girls bed. Her brother came 19 months after her and we could not afford two cribs so used a used twin of my moms. No toddler beds then. The other kids all loved going to their big beds, just wanting to follow their siblings. They didnt get a choice in what they got. For 3 of our girls we had a bunk with at trundle, all sharing the same room.
Now my youngest is 13. At age 10 she got to choose her own bed.
The hardest part is getting them to stay in bed and not worrying about them falling out.
We have a 15 month old grand daughter who lives with us. Mommy is just talking about the toddler bed right now. No room for her to have a big girl bed here…they share a room. It is exciting to think about it now though, with all the options!

No toddler beds when my daughter was little she went from a crib to a twin. I cant see a small child in a King size that would be a bit much!

My brothers had bunk beds for a while growing up, and I remember thinking the same thing when I bought a set for my son–it’s extra space in case someone sleeps over. And we *did* use it for extra sleeping space…maybe 3 times…lol. The rest of the time it was toy space. We eventually also changed from the bunk beds to a queen size for him–by then I guess the whole “Queens are Girls” thinghad been resolved in his mind in favor of more space to sleep 🙂

This was a hard process for us also! My son finally got his beloved bunk bed, but now 2 years later he would like a full bed….sigh! I’m thinking about asking the kids if they’d like to switch. Queen bed for bunk beds. Wonder if they’ll go for it?!

As a kid I wouldn’ve loved bunk beds. My sis and I are real close. But, yeah, if I was in my own bedroom, I think it would be fun too. Sleep on top and then have a desk/play area on the bottom.
