These days, it’s easier than ever to find out about a vacation. After a few quick Google searches, you can know more about a town or city than a lot of the natives! With all this info at your fingertips, it can be pretty easy to get stuck in a rigid plan for your trips abroad. Here are some of the simpler ways you can make the most of your holiday.
My first tip is not to give reviews too much credit. Obviously, it’s perfectly fine to check out a few reviews of the places you’re going to be visiting. However, if you let the verdict of these reviews dictate your entire trip, you could end up missing out on a lot of great restaurants or hotels. I can think of quite a few times when I’ve gone somewhere because it got great reviews, and been sorely disappointed. I can also recall finding amazing little curiosities completely on impulse, and then being shocked to find it’s not mentioned anywhere online! Do your research, by all means. However, don’t fill your entire holiday with stops simply because someone gave them five stars!
My next tip is probably the simplest one. Slow down! If there’s one thing which will totally ruin a good holiday, it’s trying to cram in too many activities into a short space of time. Sure, there are some incredible experiences to be had wherever you go. However, exploring the area for yourself is the way to find the real gems. Independenttraveller.com has a fantastic article on the art of slow travel. A lot of people who feel they don’t get as much as they could out of travel are sticking to the tourist-orientated parts. If you spend all your time on tour busses and in large groups, how can you properly capture the spirit of the place you’re staying? Renting a car from a site like Hotwire.com is a great way to soak it all in. This way, you’ll be able to take your trip where you want it, rather than being pushed and pulled around by the tide of tourism.
Finally, make a point to detox from all your screens! Failing to do this is one of the biggest reasons modern travellers aren’t getting the experience they want from their trips. If you were thinking of bringing your Kindle, iPad, smartphone and laptop, then whittle the list down to one. In this day and age, one mobile device is all you need! I understand that you want to keep in touch. However, if you spend more time exploring and less time posting selfies, you’ll come back from your trip feeling much more wowed. Get away from your online life as much as you can bear it, and you’ll be amazed by what you find!
I hope these tips make your next holiday even more exciting and interesting. As a final, general tip, keep an open mind. If you get on your flight with a strict schedule for each day, you’ll only be scratching the surface of your destination.

You are totally right on the money with slowing down and Detoxing. Nothing ruins things more then rushing to get things done and being so tired you can’t enjoy anything.

I love that you suggest slowing down and putting down the gadgets! I’m as guilty as anyone else of loving my phone and iPad, but when it comes to traveling I want to spend time relaxing, seeing new things and spending time with my family!

We are going on a cruise over spring break and I have learned to take reviews with a grain of salt. If I followed the reviews, I would be worried about a ruined trip. But I know we will enjoy!!!

I so agree. Trying to do too much means you wind up not enjoying any of it. Even on vacation, less is more.

As I’ve aged, it’s not quite so important to me to see everything, and do everything. I’m happier to relax in one place, and walk around at my leisure.

We will definitely take your advice on minimizing electronics (which has been difficult especially with young adults and now it seems little ones barely want to put down their iPads, etc.). We are all getting together for a family Christmas reunion (except my youngest son) and have decided no electronics esp at the dinner table.
