The guestroom is often the room in a home that is used the least, yet often has the most potential. A guestroom that is infrequently used is just a wasted area that could be utilized in a better way. The guide below walks you through quick and easy ways to turn your guest room into a room that can be used year-round.
Invest in a Guest Bed
The first thing you need to do is you need to get rid of the bed that is in the guest room and exchange it for a classy one. A Murphy bed is a bed that folds up into a cabinet so that it can be stored out of sight when it is not in use. It allows you to have a lot more open space in the room when you do not have guests over. However, it is relatively old-school these days as guest beds are considered the crown jewel of the guest room. Bernhardt Furniture has many great styles of beds available for you to use in your guest bedroom.
Add a Vanity to the Room
If you want to be able to use the space as a home office without it actually looking like an office when you have guests over to visit, add a vanity to the room. When guests come to visit, they will think the vanity is a quaint place for them to be able to get ready each day. Many vanities have a charming look that will add elegance to the room. There are some vanities that are large enough to be used as desks during the times when there is no one staying with you.
Use the Space as a Playroom
Having a playroom for your kids to play in allows them to enjoy themselves without having toys spread throughout your house. The guest bedroom is often a great place to create a playroom for your kids because the space can be utilized more often.
When turning the space into a playroom when there are no guests visiting, you need to add storage to the room. Have numerous bins and baskets available for your child to put their toys in when they are not playing with them. Keeping the room tidy and organized will make it easy to relocate the bins and baskets when guests come to visit.
Use the Closet for Storage
There are things in your home that do not get used often. Instead of having to lug them up the attic when you are done using them, consider sticking them in the closet in the guest bedroom. The bottom of the closet is often a space that does not get used even when guests come to visit. The guests will still be able to hang things in the closet and you will be able to store things neatly until you need to use them.
When you are updating the guestroom in your home, take the time to consider what you would like if you were going to visit someone’s house. Consider adding a television to the space so guests can unwind on their own at the end of the day to ensure that they are as comfortable as possible at all times. Transforming the space to make it more useful for your family will benefit you and your guests in the long run and allow everyone to be happy and the room to no longer be wasted space.
I live in a small Georgia town that you most likely have never heard of and I LOVE it! My house is more than full as I am a single mother of four & caregiver to my aging mother and uncle. Lover of all things Outlander. Goes to the beat of her own drum woman.

We are in the midst of re-doing our very small spare room into an office/library and craft/sewing space. We are “empty nesters” who have dramtically downsized to a very small home. Rather than keeping up a little used extra bed, we have decided to use a nice air bed that can be stored in a clost so that the space in the room is available for us full time. I am trying to arrange the room so that we just move one table, set up the air bed (it has a frame so it sleeps like a regular bed) and the room feels like a regular bedroom for guests. I really wanted a Murphy bed, but needed that wall for bookcases instead.

I love the idea of an airbed with frame. That sounds heavenly. We have a lot of space right now but I’m sure eventually we will downsize.

Those are all great ideas. We turned ours into a home office and use the closet as storage.

I bet the office is great. Having extra storage is always welcomed.

The “guest room” in the house we’re renting hasn’t seen a guest in something like eight years now. In that time, it has devolved into the room where things go to disappear–boxes, Christmas stuff, wrapping paper, out of season clothes, the ironing board, etc. When we move in the spring (fingers crossed!), the house will have lots of storage space, so the guest room can remain a real room. I can’t wait!
Rita says
That happened at my mother’s house before she came to live with us.

My aunt has three spare rooms in her house and only one is a guest bedroom. One she uses as a library and tv room and the other room is a room where she does genealogy work.
