The True Meaning of Christmas

Dec 23, 2013 | Rita

How many times do you ever think about the true meaning of Christmas? We are so busy taking our children to see Santa, buying presents, and cooking meals. Most children think that Christmas is about Santa and presents. Although they may not even know all about Santa.

Every year we put out our manager set and as I get it all set up I tell the story of Joseph and Mary and that fateful night that brought about the birth of Jesus. I explain that Christmas is about celebrating the birth of Jesus much more than it is about gifts.

I tell the kids that birth gave us the greatest gift the world has ever or will ever know and that we should be grateful for it. Then we always go outside and look for the North Star. When I was growing up my dad use to take us outside and show us the North Star which is the brightest star in the sky and told us how that is the same star that all those years ago led the Magi to Jesus.

How do you celebrate the true meaning of Christmas with your kids?

I really need to get a nativity set and talk about the true meaning of Christmas. I really want my son to know the real meaning of Christmas.

A nativity set is a great way for kids to visualize while you tell them the story.

My son is grown, but we always talked with him and still do about the true meaning of Christmas. It seems like it is lost in the all the glitz and glitter of the season, but it’s not. At least not for us.

It is important that it doesn’t get lost.

I am so glad that many of you do share that beautiful story of what Christmas is really about.

We don’t have children yet, but my parents always spoke of God and Jesus in our home and had a Nativity out during Christmas. For years we couldn’t afford a tree so we only had the Nativity so it has always had more meaning to me. I hope to pass that along to my children some day.

I know that when you have children you will pass not only this but many other wonderful things.

What a beautiful way to teach your kids about the true meaning of Christmas. When the kids were younger I used to read them a book about the birth of Jesus. Now that they are older we usually go to midnight mass.

We attend Mass but I will have to look for some books.
