I have been spending some time catching up on shows that I wanted to watch but just didn’t have the time. One of those series is Unforgotten on BritBox. I have BritBox added to my Prime Video channels because I enjoy British television shows. Unforgotten stars Nicola Walker and Sanjeev Bhaskar as detectives investigating long-forgotten murders.
Each season deals with a different case so nothing is solved within an episode or two. In season one DCI Cassie Stuart (Walker) and DI Sunil “Sunny” Khan (Bhaskar) are investigating a skeleton that is unearthed in a building with a car key as the only clue to the victim’s identity. This season deals with racism and hate as well as murder.
As we go through each episode we meet various characters who are in some way or another involved with the case. They knew the victim, are the killer, et. The one thing we don’t find out is which one is the killer until DCI Stuart and DI Khan do. I loved that. There was no he did or she did. I have my thoughts on who the killer could have been.
I will say there was one point when I thought another person was going to die. They didn’t but I wasn’t sure that is for certain. In episode 3 we do get another body and a whole other set of questions. How are the two bodies connected? Who killed the second one person? The whole thing get complicated because the woman who told about the second body has dementia.
NPR called Unfogotten “The Detective Show You Didn’t Know You Needed” and they couldn’t be more right. This show is rather calm in the telling of everyone’s story. We get to know the victim as well as the suspects and feel for them. We feel for the families left behind and the damage this death has caused.
What we don’t get is a surprise killer that we didn’t meet at all. The rapport that Walker and Bhaskar have with one another add depth to their characters. I liked them immediately as detectives and I really enjoyed the fact they are able to disagree without having some sort of screaming match. The relationship that DCI Stuart has with her father gives another layer to her character and we can easily see the struggles she seems to be having. That will be highlighted more in each of the next seasons.
If you are looking for a good, solid detective show full that will leave you guessing til the end then I highly recommend Unforgotten. It is available on both PBS Masterpiece and BritBox. If you have watched it or do, let me know what you think about it.
I live in a small Georgia town that you most likely have never heard of and I LOVE it! My house is more than full as I am a single mother of four & caregiver to my aging mother and uncle. Lover of all things Outlander. Goes to the beat of her own drum woman.
