Nicola Walker and Sanjeev Bhaskar are back as DCI Cassie Stuart and DI Sunil “Sunny” Khan and this time they have a body in a suitcase found in the water. It has been there for 25 years so you can guess just how it looks.
Once again we re swept away as the story unfolds. We meet the victim, David Walker, who was abused as a child and his wife who thought he had left them. She has since became a police officer and remarried. Their son who has all sorts of abandonment issues.
We also meet the suspects; a gay couple who are about to adopt a child, a teacher who is apply for a job to be a headmistress, and a woman who has had mental health issues in the past. Who could have killed David Walker and why? As the story unfolds I find myself caring about David Walker as well as the various suspects. Their lives are so damaged by everything that happens to them. In this season we really get to know the suspects far more than last season. We become immersed int heir lives.
The ending for this particular case was one that I didn’t see coming. It reminded me of a Poirot mystery I read once. No, I won’t say which one as it may give too much away. That aside I don’t think there could have been another way to end this one. After all, just how much justice is needed? Was it not served? Was the pain and suffering for everyone involved in this case not more than enough? This case I think affected DCI Stuart more than the last and I think whatever it was that bothered is what flows over into season three.
Once again we are left with a simple masterpeice. Every actor does an amazing job portraying their characters. You find yourself on the edge of your seat waiting to find out what happens. It is well written and smart. while there is science we don’t get lost in it. This series is about solving the case and the mystery of it. the science is there in the background which makes it all the more important when it’s introduced.
