“I shook so that it was some time before I realized that he was shaking too, and for the same reason. I don’t know how long we sat there on the dusty floor, crying in each others arms with the longing of twenty years spilling down our faces.”
About the Book
Their passionate encounter happened long ago by whatever measurement Claire Randall took. Two decades before, she had traveled back in time and into the arms of a gallant eighteenth-century Scot named Jamie Fraser. Then she returned to her own century to bear his child, believing him dead in the tragic battle of Culloden. Yet his memory has never lessened its hold on her… and her body still cries out for him in her dreams.
Then Claire discovers that Jamie survived. Torn between returning to him and staying with their daughter in her own era, Claire must choose her destiny. And as time and space come full circle, she must find the courage to face the passion and pain awaiting her…the deadly intrigues raging in a divided Scotland… and the daring voyage into the dark unknown that can reunite—or forever doom—her timeless love.
My Thoughts
You get to read more about what has happened to Jamie during the time apart from Claire. What we discover is that Jamie is not the same man who Claire left on the eve of Culloden. He has been forced through blackmail to father a son by one woman and through loneliness to wed another. Yet through everything he has endured (and trust me it is a lot) he has never loved another except Claire. Every time he thinks of her and his child he sends a prayer to God that they may be safe. Claire has not had an easy time of it in the twenty years apart from Jamie either. She stayed with Frank in a loveless marriage because of Brianna. She then had to suffer Brianna’s wrath at learning that it was Jamie and not Frank who was her father. Like Jamie though Claire has never loved another.
“Only you,” he said, so softly I could barely hear him. “To worship ye with my body, give ye all the service of my hands. To give ye my name, and all my heart and soul with it. Only you. Because ye will not let me lie–and yet ye love me.”
Voyager is a roller coaster ride from Claire and Jamie reuniting (when she shows him Brianna’s pictures I cried again) to Jamie becoming a ship captain (for someone who gets so sea sick he is pretty good at it) the ride is wonderful. We get to travel with Jamie and Claire as they search for his nephew Ian and try to get to know one another again. All the while trying to not get themselves killed and to finally be able to sleep together on the ship.
I live in a small Georgia town that you most likely have never heard of and I LOVE it! My house is more than full as I am a single mother of four & caregiver to my aging mother and uncle. Lover of all things Outlander. Goes to the beat of her own drum woman.

Read these when they first came out in the 1990’s. Had to wait a year in between each book for another book in the series to come out. Painful. And, yes, I cried buckets with each book. Have not watched the tv version. Afraid it just wouldn’t do the book justice.

Jeane,
Just couldn’t stop crying in this one. You would love the tv version, they have done a wonderful job of doing the books justice. They of course have added in a few things but there is nothing that takes away from the books, it only adds to them. I will tell you though there are some scenes that are hard to read but watching them is even harder. When Black Jack flogs Jamie I had to turn away and then finally walk out of the room until it was over.

Voyager is my favorite of the Outlander series. The emotions are high, the stakes are higher and the scenes where Claire and Jamie reunite are haunting. You never forget them. I have read the entire series several times and now am enjoying the TV series based on the books.

I agree! It is my favorite of the series as well. So much happens and there are so many wonderful scenes where Jamie and Claire are just trying to reunite and be together without any of the drama that always surrounds them. In fact my favorite scene is when they are caught in the rain on the plantation looking for Young Ian. They are standing under the shelter not really saying much just being together.
