Wedding Reception Food Ideas

Sep 26, 2013 | Rita

table setting

The reception food! I am sure there are brides all over the world screaming right now as they are trying to decide what to serve all the reception guests. There are simply so many options now that a bride can choose from. First things a bride must decide if she will be having a full meal or finger foods. Then will be sit down or buffet style. One good rule of thumb is to plan for those picky eaters and the aunt who won’t like anything! Also please consider those with food allergies!

Buffet Style Ideas

If you are having a buffet style reception then having something like lasagna another pasta dish. They work very well with buffets and are not over expensive. Also Baron of Beef, roast turkey, baked ham, baby roasted potatoes, hot mixed veggies, five or six salads, cheeses, pickles, buns; veggie and fruit trays all work well on a buffet. For desserts if you are having a large reception consider cupcakes in a variety of flavors for guest and a small wedding cake for you to cut.

Finger Foods

Finger foods may be the way to go for some brides. They are inexpensive and allow you to spend more time mingling with your guests. Not to mention you are less likely to ruin your dress (I will spill gravy, just wait and see!) A few good ideas are stuffed mushroom caps,Savory Cabrales Blue Cheese, Basil and Cherry Tomato Tart Squares,Pumpkin Empanadillas with Whipped Fresh Cream Dip,Iced Jumbo Shrimp with Spicy Pink Cocktail Sauce,Maple Ham with Cheyenne Cheddar Biscuits & Honey Mustard , along with countless others.

All of the above ideas are great starting points but as I said you need to consider your guests. However that is only to a point. Guests who have allergies or medical needs (diabetes, heart disease, etc) should be considered. Aunt Tilly who just doesn’t like a thing doesn’t really get a vote.

These are great tips. I didn’t even think about people with food allergies. There are so many different ways to go. I personally think buffet style is the way to go. That way people can pick and choose what they like.

I agree Aunt Tilly can just starve LOL. I personally am not picky when it comes to food but I do understand food allergies as I am allergic to bell peppers.

So funny you touched on so many ideas my daughter is working through right now! She and I , plus a few others are gluten free so she and her fiance are going simple with two meats and two veggies, plus the traditional cake for just the head table and then different flavors of cupcakes for the guests. Later on for dance time, they are offering snacks and home made desserts that the families are helping with. Signature drinks and that is it. It can be VERY expensive to serve full dinners. They are going buffet style and having a tropical more summer party theme. I just think couples should do it THERE way and not do everything
traditional just because some sort of rules have been set for years.

Some good ideas! It is so hard to come up with something everyone can eat…so many allergies and different diets these days.

Food is very important to pick for a wedding. Finger foods are easy to have and do not require a lot of work. It does depend on the amount of money a bride and groom want to spend on food for their wedding. If they can afford it, catering is the way to go.
