Workplace Injuries

Apr 06, 2016 | Rita

Workplace Injuries are Serious Business

Getting hurt at work can be a fact of life. I mean lets face it happens and much more than anyone really wants it to.  while there are more than enough of these sort of accidents that happen due to person error and are avoidable more than enough are simply nothing more than an accident and completely unavoidable. I can tell you from my years in Human Resources that while employers hope to never have such accidents they happen. Luckily I only ever had one serious accident in all of years out in the work force. I’m not counting the time I attempted to get a watermelon out of the bin for a pregnant custom and fell into the bin cause I was too short to be doing that. the only thing that got hurt then was my pride.

No I am talking about the one time I actually had a piece of hard plastic that had been cut fly up and hit me in the eye. It cut my eyeball and hurt like you wouldn’t believe. It was simply nothing more than an unavoidable accident. No one was to blame and the company was quick to pay for my treatment and they even paid me for the week I was out of work to allow my eye time to heal. They were great although I know that isn’t always the case.

Only 10%

Did you know that statically only 10% of workplace injuries that occur injure your head? I did not know that and really thought that was a really low number. I would think more than happened since you can hit your head on a counter or cabinet so easily without meaning to. My injury happen to my eye which is in the head area so I don’t know if that counts or not. I do know of an employee who actually bent down and hit one of those things that bags hang on in the grocery store and it stuck in their eye. I have also heard a child fall out of a shopping cart and hit the floor. I’m not even going to tell you how awful that sound was. My worst workplace injury happened to a customer and it was where a little girl stuck her arm into the back side of an automatic door. You know the side where the hinges are and it swings. Every time we got near it to try and turn off the automatic opener her little arm prevent the door from opening and was crushed even more. We finally had to use a broom and ladder to get far enough away to turn it.

Most Dangerous

The most dangerous area for accidents is the agriculture industry which I can totally see. I mean they use all sorts of equipment and stuff that could lead to an accident. I’m so klutzy that I am sure I work cut off an arm working that field. ;)Learn more about workplace injuries by the numbers so that you can be informed. After all you would hate to know that the new job you were starting was one where you were more likely to have an accident. For me nowadays the most likely accident during work is a paper cut or to fall off my chair (which has happened a time or two when I try to reach something to far away!)
