6 Things to Try If Your Acne Won't Clear

Acne is a common skin condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It can be frustrating, especially when it seems like nothing works to clear it up. If you’re struggling with persistent acne, don’t lose hope. Moving beyond the usual remedies, this article delves into five innovative approaches to tackle stubborn acne.

From rethinking your skincare regimen to embracing lifestyle changes and considering professional treatments, we offer a comprehensive guide to help you achieve the clear, healthy skin you’ve been striving for.

Here are six strategies you might not have tried yet.

1. Reassess Your Skincare Routine

The journey to combat persistent acne often begins with a critical evaluation of your skincare routine. The intricacies of skincare are vast, and what works for one person might not work for another. It’s crucial to understand your skin type – whether it’s oily, dry, combination, or sensitive – and adjust your routine accordingly. Using a gentle cleanser is key to removing dirt and oil without stripping your skin of its natural moisture.

Similarly, moisturizing is an essential step, but it’s important to choose non-comedogenic products that hydrate your skin without clogging your pores. It’s also worth examining all your skincare and makeup products to ensure they are suitable for acne-prone skin.

2. Diet and Lifestyle Changes

While the link between diet and acne isn’t concrete, certain dietary patterns may influence breakouts in some individuals. Adopting a low-glycemic diet rich in whole grains, lean proteins, and fresh fruits and vegetables might help. Reducing the intake of high-glycemic foods, such as white bread, sugary treats, and sodas, is often recommended.

Staying hydrated is another key factor; it helps flush out toxins and maintain skin health. Beyond diet, incorporating regular exercise into your routine can also be beneficial. Exercise increases blood flow and helps nourish skin cells, not to mention its role in reducing stress, a known trigger for acne.

3. Over-the-Counter Treatments

If you haven’t yet explored the range of over-the-counter (OTC) treatments, it might be worth

giving them a try. The skincare market is replete with products formulated to combat acne, featuring ingredients like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, and alpha-hydroxy acids. These ingredients target acne in different ways, from reducing inflammation and bacteria to promoting skin cell turnover and unclogging pores.

It’s important to use these treatments consistently, as intermittent use can diminish their effectiveness. Patience is also vital, as it may take several weeks or even months to notice significant improvements.

4. Consider a Cosmetic Acne Treatment

For those seeking advanced solutions, cosmetic acne treatments can be a game-changer, suggests experts at ICONIC Wellness. These include procedures like chemical peels, laser therapy, and microdermabrasion, which target acne and its scars.

Chemical peels involve applying a solution to peel off the top layer of skin, promoting new skin growth. Laser therapy reduces acne bacteria and skin oiliness, while microdermabrasion exfoliates to unclog pores.

These treatments, often performed by dermatologists or licensed skin care professionals, can provide more immediate results compared to topical treatments. However, they can be more expensive and require a series of sessions for optimal results.

5. Stress Management

The impact of stress on the skin, particularly acne, is often underestimated. High stress levels can exacerbate acne by increasing the production of hormones such as cortisol, which can in turn increase oil production in the skin. Incorporating stress-reduction techniques into your daily routine can be beneficial. Activities like meditation, yoga, or deep breathing exercises can significantly reduce stress levels.

Getting a good night’s sleep is also crucial, as sleep deprivation can worsen acne. Maintaining a balanced lifestyle, where work, leisure, and relaxation are in harmony, can contribute significantly to reducing overall stress levels and, consequently, to better skin health.

6. Natural Remedies and Supplements

Exploring natural remedies and supplements can be an alternative or complement to conventional acne treatments. Ingredients like tea tree oil, green tea extract, and zinc have been known to have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties that can help in treating acne.

However, it’s important to research and approach these remedies cautiously, as natural does not always mean safe for everyone. Moreover, not every remedy might suit your body. So, it is vital to try different solutions and see what works best for you!

Final Takeaway

Dealing with stubborn acne can be challenging, but don’t give up. By re-evaluating your skincare routine, adjusting your diet, trying OTC treatments, managing stress, and seeking professional help, you can find the right solution for your skin.

Remember, every person’s skin is unique, so what works for one person might not work for another. Thus, it is important for you to be patient and persistent, and you’ll be on your way to clearer skin.

Be careful…it’s easy to confuse acne with rosacea, and make the rosacea worse through overdrying!
