A Very Holiday Mishap

A Very Holiday Mishap

As the holiday season approached, I decided this year would be different. I’d finally get a jumpstart on my Christmas preparations instead of scrambling at the last minute like a contestant on a holiday game show. So, I made a plan: I would decorate the house, bake cookies, and maybe even attempt to wrap presents without using an entire roll of tape. Spoiler alert: that last part was wishful thinking.

On a particularly chilly December afternoon, I pulled out the Christmas decorations, determined to create a winter wonderland. The lights? Check. The ornaments? Check. The inflatable Santa that looked more like he’d had one too many eggnogs? Double check. As I proudly surveyed my handiwork, it struck me—I’d forgotten the tree! I rushed to the attic, knocked over a few dusty boxes, and emerged victorious with a tree that had seen better days. It was a bit lopsided and had a few suspicious brown spots, but hey, that’s what holiday spirit is all about, right?

After wrestling the tree into the living room, I realized it was too tall for the ceiling. So, I did what any rational midlifer would do: I grabbed the trusty step stool and climbed up to trim it. I thought about how I could finally post that “Christmas tree decorating” video I always see on social media. That’s when my foot slipped. One moment, I was reaching for the top, and the next, I was in a freefall, flailing like a cartoon character.

Miraculously, I landed safely on the couch, which was nice considering that my tree was now leaning precariously to one side and a few ornaments had decided to embark on their own adventure across the living room floor. I sat there for a moment, catching my breath and wondering how I’d end up in such ridiculous situations. I could hear my family laughing in the kitchen, probably still baking cookies without me. They were blissfully unaware that I’d just declared war on the Christmas tree.

So, what did I learn from this little escapade? Well, if you ever find yourself feeling overwhelmed by holiday preparations, just remember: It’s not about having the perfect tree, cookies, or decorations. It’s about enjoying the chaos, the laughter, and maybe even the occasional holiday mishap. And as I watched my lopsided tree sparkle with lights, I couldn’t help but chuckle. After all, Christmas wouldn’t be the same without a little bit of humor—and a sturdy couch to land on!

Hah what a wonderful story! I can picture the Christmas tree fiasco! You’re very correct though – the holidays are about the ones around you, love and laughter rather than finding perfection.

So glad to hear that you landed on the couch! I have fallen on the ladder a couple of times and now I am super careful. Hey a crooked tree shows come character.
