Everybody Loves a Dad in Costume

Oct 25, 2012 | Rita

By: Eden, Janine and Jim

If you are a parent who loves dressing up for Halloween with the kids and loves a bargain, remember to shop for Halloween costumes after the holiday has ended. Stores offer big discounts on all Halloween-related merchandise right after the special night. They do this to clear out old stock.

A stores wish to clear means you may be in costume discount heaven. This goes for all costumes, from infant costumes to adult mens costumes. If you buy next year’s costume at these discounted rates, you can get a jump-start on Halloween fun while parents who waited will be paying premium prices.

Where to Look for Deals

Visit grocery stores and department stores first. They are usually the first stores to take Halloween merchandise off the shelves, whether they sold any at discount prices or not. Next, visit local costume stores and do not forget to check online stores, and even restaurants for special food deals.

Online costume stores hold great sales on Halloween costumes right after Halloween and sometimes off and on throughout the year. It is not rare to see from 10 percent to even 75 percent off Halloween costumes and other items. In addition, online stores usually have a much larger selection. Don’t forget to pick up some decorations and props while you are at it.

Costume Ideas for Dads and Kids:

Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker or Princess Leia

A Darth Vader costume is always a great hit. Your kids could dress as Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia or a number of other star wars characters. Some light saber props light up and make cool sounds for impressing the little ones. You could even have mock battles.

Batman and Robin

Batman and Robin make great costumes for father and son. If you have other children in the picture, they could be other characters from this show, or bats. There are several styles of these costumes. Some are styled like the original television show, while others are in the style of the new Batman movies.

Flintstones

Go as the popular Stone Age dad, Fred Flintstone, and dress the kids as Pebbles and Bam Bam or Barney Rubble. If your wife wants to come along, of course she should go as Wilma.

Vampire and Bats

A Vampire costume for dad and bat costumes for the kids is very cute if the children are young, such as toddlers or infants. Older children could go as young vampires. Vampire costumes are easy to accessorize with makeup and fangs. You can make yourself look as scary as you want.

Viking and Valkyrie

If you want to step away from the common costumes and go with something more exotic, Viking and Valkyrie costumes for dads and daughters can be awesome.

Dr. Frankenstein and His Monster

Dress in a tail coat, top hat or a lab coat and go as the mad scientist who created Frankenstein’s monster. Your child can put on the green makeup and fake sutures to be the monster. You can buy kids’ Frankenstein costumes or make it at home. To make a homemade costume for any idea, you will need a scruffy old jacket and dark pants with a ragged hem.

Thats the only time I do buy costumes is right after they go on sale. It is silly to pay $ full price for something you only wear one day!
