How many of you are scrambling to search for a Father’s Day gift? There was a time when I would have been as well. I don’t know about y’all but my father always carried a pocket knife so finding the best one was important to us. This year I am helping my nephew search for the best pocket knife to carry every day for my brother. Don’t worry, my children have gotten their father’s gifts.
How Will They Use the Knife
There are a lot of things to consider when selecting a pocket knife for your father. One of the first things is to think about how your father will use the knife. For my brother, he will use it for opening boxes and such. However, since he is big into jeeping and outdoors it may serve him better to have a knife with a little more function such as a tactical pocket knife. A tactical one will give him more durability and he will be able to use it out on the trails more than if it was a simple knife.
My father was a mechanic for the Army so he had a pocket knife that he carried for work and then another one that use put in his pocket when he had to dress up. He once said that you never know when you might need a pocket knife. That is why he always had one on him at all times.
Blades
There is a lot to consider when it comes to the blades of the knife you select. As far as blades go, do you want a single blade or multiple blades? Do you need more of a multitool or will something simple work for you? Then there is the blade size. If I was buying for myself I would select a shorter blade length because I am a petite gal so I don’t need something the size of a machete. A good middle of the road size is the medium length which is 2.75-4 inches. They worked well for just about anyone.
If that wasn’t enough to make your head spin you also have to consider the various blade shapes. The straight-back or normal blade is perfect for everyday use and what a lot of pockets knives have on them. It is a good shape and will work well for any and everything that may come up.
Handles
If the idea of picking a blade is difficult then the handles are going to throw you for a loop. Classic handle choices are bone and wood. However, if you select a tactical pocket knife you will most likely get a metal handle of some sort. There are also other materials that the handles can be made from. In the end it all depends on how much you want to spend and what the knife will be used for. One thing you must do is consider the handle size in proportion to the hands of the person using it. For example, my brother is a big guy so his hands are larger so he could use a longer handled knife.
Selecting a pocket knife is a personal choice so be sure that you consider everything involved when you select one. If you are looking to give a knife that isn’t for everyday use then feel free to get an ornate handle and design. If you are looking for an everyday sort of pocket knife then I would suggest you keep the design and handle simple.
