Friday Conversations: The Unexpected Guests at Thanksgiving

Friday Conversations: The Unexpected Guests at Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and as usual, things around Shady Pines have gotten a little more… lively than expected. I had this year’s holiday all planned out—menu finalized, grocery list printed, and roles assigned. Ma was on dessert duty, Uncle R had turkey honors, and I was prepared to glide gracefully through the day as the self-proclaimed Director of Delegation and Gravy Oversight. But, as life so often reminds me, plans are just suggestions written in pencil—and mine just got erased.

This week has been one surprise after another, and the biggest of all? We’re apparently hosting extra guests for Thanksgiving. Unexpected ones. The kind that don’t RSVP, show up early, and have a knack for turning your household upside down faster than you can say “pass the cranberry sauce.”

Let’s just say… it’s shaping up to be one memorable holiday.

This Week in the Wilderness

The week started calmly enough. I’d been trying to stay organized—working through my shopping list, hunting for sales, and planning how to avoid wrestling strangers in the grocery store over the last can of pumpkin puree. Then, out of nowhere, the phone rang.

It was Ma’s cousin, bless her heart, calling to say she’d “be in the area” for Thanksgiving and might just stop by. “Might” being Southern for “you better set an extra place.” Before I could even process that, Uncle R came in grinning, saying he’d invited a “friend from the lodge” who didn’t have family nearby. And just like that, our quiet, planned holiday dinner grew by two—and possibly three, if you count the cousin’s dog who apparently “doesn’t like being left alone.”

Of course, I’m a good hostess, and the spirit of Thanksgiving is about welcoming others… but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t stare at my carefully organized table chart and mutter, “Well, there goes the seating plan.”

So, this week’s wilderness has been me rearranging, repurchasing, and rethinking. More food to cook, more chairs to squeeze in, and more deep breaths than I can count. It’s funny how one unexpected call can turn a peaceful week into a logistical adventure.

Life at Shady Pines: Free-Range Seniors and the Great Guest Debate

Now, if there’s one thing you should know about Ma and Uncle R, it’s that they handle surprises very differently. Ma’s reaction to unexpected guests is pure Southern hospitality on overdrive. Within minutes, she was making lists of additional side dishes we “just have to have,” pulling out every tablecloth she owns, and talking about running to the store for “a few more pies.”

Uncle R, on the other hand, decided this was an opportunity to “get creative.” His contribution? Suggesting we smoke an extra turkey “just in case,” which, in his mind, also required a new smoker accessory and a test run “to make sure it works properly.” I caught him in the backyard on Wednesday afternoon wearing his lodge apron, fiddling with propane lines, and declaring that “real men smoke meat by instinct.” I’m still not sure what that means, but I do know I smelled like mesquite for the rest of the day.

Then came the question of sleeping arrangements. “Don’t worry,” Uncle R said cheerfully, “I’ll blow up the air mattress!” If you’ve never watched a man of his age wrestle with an air pump that refuses to cooperate, you’ve never truly seen comedy. At one point, Ma was holding the plug, the dog was barking, and Uncle R was threatening to “just sleep in the truck.”

So yes, Shady Pines has been full of laughter (and mild chaos) this week. And honestly? As much as I love peace and order, I can’t help but smile at the circus.

Hot Flashes & More: The Joys of Midlife (and Letting Go of Control)

If there’s one thing midlife has taught me, it’s that control is mostly an illusion. You can plan every detail, prep every dish, and write out the prettiest list in the world—but something (or someone) will always throw a wrench in the works.

I used to get worked up when things didn’t go as planned. Now? I try to roll with it. Maybe it’s wisdom. Maybe it’s exhaustion. Maybe it’s the fact that my hormones could start a small campfire on their own and I just don’t have the energy to care anymore. Whatever it is, I’ve learned to laugh instead of stress.

So, when Ma announced we’d need “just one more pie” and Uncle R started Googling “how to smoke two turkeys at once,” I poured myself a cup of tea, turned on some music, and decided to let the week unfold however it wanted. Because at the end of the day, Thanksgiving isn’t about perfection—it’s about showing up, eating good food, and surviving your relatives with your sense of humor intact.

A Moment of Peace and Quiet

Finding a little peace and quiet this week has been… well, a challenge. Between grocery store runs, table rearranging, and a dog I barely know taking up residence on my couch, quiet moments have been rare. But I found one the other evening.

Everyone had gone to bed (including the dog), and I sat by the window with a slice of apple pie from last weekend’s “test bake.” The house was dark except for the glow of the streetlight outside, and for a few blissful minutes, everything felt calm.

I could smell the faint scent of cinnamon lingering in the kitchen, hear the steady hum of the refrigerator, and feel that deep, satisfying mix of exhaustion and contentment that only comes after a long, full day. It was in that stillness I realized—this is Thanksgiving. Not the perfect table or the picture-worthy meal, but these small, quiet pauses that remind me just how blessed I am to have a home full of people (and dogs) who keep life interesting.

Final Thoughts

So, as I look ahead to next week’s big feast, I’m letting go of my expectations and embracing whatever surprises Thanksgiving brings—invited or not. Because maybe the unexpected guests are the best part of the holiday after all. They remind us that hospitality isn’t about having everything just right—it’s about opening your door, your heart, and maybe even your last slice of pie.

And if all else fails, at least there’ll be stories to tell.

Here’s to unexpected guests, laughter that fills the house, and a Thanksgiving that’s perfectly imperfect—just the way life tends to be around here.

It sounds like you will have some fun times. I agree that being hospitable means being flexible, as well. You may be a shining light to those who need it this year.
