Happy Fourth of July 2025

Happy Fourth of July 2025

Y’all, can you believe it’s already the 4th of July? It feels like we were just putting away the Easter decorations and brushing pollen off the porch rockers, and now here we are, gearing up for fireworks, cookouts, and all things red, white, and blue.

Independence Day has always held a special place in my heart. It’s a time to pause and reflect, to gather with loved ones, and to celebrate the freedoms we enjoy—while also savoring good food, warm weather, and the joy of being together. Whether you’re heading to the lake, firing up the grill, or simply soaking in the sunshine with a tall glass of sweet tea, I hope today is exactly what you need it to be.

Here at Shady Pines, things are feeling especially festive—and maybe just a little bit chaotic in that way only a holiday with senior citizens and humidity can be. Ma has been in full holiday mode since the calendar flipped to July, and Uncle R has declared himself the “Grill Master General,” a title no one else voted on but somehow he’s already made a badge for.

So what are we up to this Independence Day? Well, let me give y’all a little peek into how we’re celebrating around here.

This Morning: Pancakes and Planning

The day started early—as it always does when Ma is excited about something. She was up before sunrise, banging around the kitchen and asking me if we had enough paper plates and whether the bunting looked “even” across the porch railing. She takes her patriotic decorating seriously, bless her.

We kicked things off with a big breakfast: blueberry pancakes (because they’re blue-ish, Ma says), crispy bacon, and fresh cantaloupe from the farmers market. Uncle R tried to add whipped cream and sprinkles to his pancakes to make them “festive,” which only resulted in half the sprinkles ending up on the floor and the dog’s tongue turning red and blue.

While we ate, we made a loose plan for the day—not that anyone ever sticks to it. There will be grilled hot dogs and burgers around lunchtime, a break for naps (mandatory for everyone over 70 and strongly encouraged for the rest of us), and then we’ll set up for the neighborhood firework-watching party on the front lawn.

Afternoon Festivities: Food, Family, and Firecrackers

The afternoon will be all about keeping cool and keeping things moving. Uncle R is manning the grill, which could go either way. Last year he accidentally set the corner of the grill cover on fire trying to relight the charcoal with a “little splash” of lighter fluid. This year I’ve got a garden hose at the ready and have strictly banned anything flammable from being within five feet of him.

We’re keeping the menu simple and Southern: grilled burgers and hot dogs, potato salad, deviled eggs, coleslaw, baked beans, and watermelon wedges. Ma made a flag cake again—yellow cake with Cool Whip, strawberries, and blueberries arranged into a flag on top. She’s very proud of it, as she should be. Uncle R says it’s “too pretty to eat,” but that didn’t stop him from sneaking a corner of it last night.

There’ll be kids from the neighborhood running around with sparklers, lemonade pitchers sweating in the heat, and lots of laughter and storytelling. It’s the kind of messy, beautiful gathering that reminds me just how much joy can be found in the simple things.

Evening: Fireworks and Front Porch Views

We’ll finish the day the best way we know how—on the porch. That’s where we’ll be as the sky starts to darken, iced tea in hand, watching the first fireworks bloom over the trees. Our little town puts on a decent show for the 4th, and you can see most of it from our lawn. Some of the neighbors bring over folding chairs and bug spray, and we all sit out front like it’s the best seat in the house—because it is.

Uncle R will probably give a speech at some point. It’s never planned, and it usually includes at least one completely made-up historical fact and a reference to “the good old days” when watermelon cost a nickel and kids respected firecrackers. We’ll nod, we’ll laugh, and Ma will shush him if he starts getting too carried away.

A Gentle Reminder

Before I close, I just want to say this: Take today to celebrate, to breathe, to be present. Enjoy your family. Put down your phone for a while. Laugh a little louder. Eat the extra slice of cake. Let the kids stay up late. Tell stories. Remember the ones who aren’t with you and cherish the ones who are.

Holidays don’t have to be perfect to be beautiful. They don’t have to go according to plan to be memorable. Sometimes the best moments are the unplanned ones—the ones you’ll talk about for years.

So from all of us here at Shady Pines—Ma, Uncle R, the dog who may or may not have eaten an entire hot dog bun, and me—we wish you the happiest 4th of July.

Wave your flags, fill your plate, and light up the sky.
And if you’ve got a rocking chair handy, well, now’s the time to use it.

Happy Independence Day, y’all!
