Homemade Peach Ice Cream: A Family Favorite

Aug 13, 2025 | Rita

Homemade Peach Ice Cream A Family Favorite

There’s something undeniably magical about homemade ice cream, especially when it’s made with sun-ripened peaches at the height of summer. In our family, peach ice cream isn’t just dessert—it’s tradition. It tastes like summer afternoons on the porch, sticky fingers, laughter drifting through screen doors, and that joyful stillness that only comes when everyone is content with a bowl in hand.

Why We Love It

Peach ice cream holds a special place in our hearts. Every July, when peaches come into season, we make it a point to visit a local farm and pick our own. The kids love it—reaching up into the trees, trying to find the ripest, juiciest peaches. Once home, we peel, slice, and sweeten them, and by the end of the day, the freezer is humming with our first batch of the season. It’s more than a recipe—it’s a memory in the making.

This recipe has been passed down and tweaked slightly over the years, but it never fails to deliver a creamy, sweet scoop of nostalgia. It’s rich with real fruit, not overly sweet, and perfectly balanced with just a hint of vanilla.

The Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 4–5 ripe peaches, peeled and diced
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (divided)
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Juice of half a lemon (optional, to brighten the flavor)

Instructions:

  1. Toss the diced peaches with ½ cup of the sugar. Let them macerate for about 30 minutes, then mash or puree to your desired consistency.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the remaining sugar, cream, milk, vanilla, salt, and lemon juice.
  3. Stir in the peaches.
  4. Pour into your ice cream maker and churn according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  5. Once churned, transfer to a lidded container and freeze for 4–6 hours or until firm.

Tips for the Best Peach Ice Cream

  • Use fresh, ripe peaches for the most intense flavor. If you’re in a pinch, frozen can work—just thaw and drain them first.
  • Don’t skip the lemon juice if your peaches are super sweet. It brightens the flavor and adds just the right amount of contrast.
  • Texture matters: If your family likes fruit chunks, leave the peaches diced. If not, puree them smooth for a uniform bite.

Make It a Tradition

We usually serve ours in waffle cones after dinner or scoop it into bowls for weekend cookouts. Some years we’ve even brought out the old hand-crank ice cream maker and turned it into a family affair. Everyone takes a turn churning, laughing, and sneaking tastes.

Peach ice cream may be simple, but it never fails to bring joy. It’s a reminder that the best summer moments are the ones shared—with good food, great company, and a little bit of tradition.

I have been buying some of the best, sweetest peaches at a local family farm. I’ve made cobbler & a pie, but I really don’t like peach ice cream. That is just my personnel taste.
