Life Lately: July’s Sweltering Fun

Life Lately: July’s Sweltering Fun

July arrived like it always does—loud, hot, and completely uninterested in whether or not we’re ready for it. There’s no easing into a Southern July. It doesn’t whisper. It doesn’t wait. One day you’re sitting on the porch enjoying a gentle summer breeze, and the next you’re practically peeling yourself off the rocking chair like a cheese slice from a hot sandwich.

Life at Shady Pines in July is what I like to call a combination of chaos and charm. It’s sunburns and watermelon slices, wasp sightings and lemonade refills. You can’t be mad at it because even in the middle of sweating through your second outfit of the day, there’s something kind of magical about it all.

Ma says she remembers when summers weren’t so hot, but then again she also says she remembers when postage stamps were three cents and people had manners. Uncle R has declared war on the air conditioner, convinced it’s making the electric bill higher just to spite him. He’s taken to napping on the screened-in porch with a fan blowing straight in his face and a wet bandana around his neck like he’s training for the frontier.

We’ve been spending most afternoons in that delicate dance of doing as little as possible while still feeling productive. That means iced tea is constantly brewing, laundry is hung out to dry so it can bake to a crisp in under twenty minutes, and dinners are whatever doesn’t require the oven. If it can be grilled, chilled, or served with a side of sliced tomatoes, it’s fair game.

This month, I decided to do something wild and host a little backyard supper. Just a few neighbors, a pitcher of sweet tea, and some grilled chicken. I figured we’d keep it easy. What I didn’t count on was the heat index hitting 105 and the mosquitoes showing up like they got a formal invitation. Uncle R tried to light some citronella torches, which did nothing but give the yard a faint smell of lemon and fire hazard. Ma stayed indoors and waved at folks through the window like the Queen of England.

Still, we laughed, we ate, and we bonded over the sheer absurdity of trying to be social in this weather. That’s the thing about summer in the South—it doesn’t always make sense, but it sure does make memories.

Speaking of memories, July has brought out the annual tradition of Shady Pines Water Woes. Every year around this time, something goes wrong with the sprinkler system, the garden hose explodes like it’s been holding a grudge, or we discover that someone (usually Uncle R) left the tap on in the shed. This year it was a little of everything. One afternoon, Ma hollered for me from the back window because water was spewing from the base of the birdbath like Old Faithful. Turned out, Uncle R had tried to “rig up a better flow” using some PVC pipe, two zip ties, and hope. We’re still drying out the hydrangeas.

And don’t even get me started on the humidity. Every time I leave the house, I come back looking like I’ve been steaming vegetables with my face. Hair? Forget it. Makeup? Useless. I’ve learned to embrace the glow—mostly because I don’t have a choice.

But in between the sticky afternoons and chaotic backyard misadventures, there are moments of peace that feel hard-earned and all the sweeter for it. Early mornings on the porch before the sun really gets bossy. Sitting with a cold glass of lemonade while the crickets start up their nightly concert. Watching Ma work her crossword puzzles in the cooler part of the day, brow furrowed and pencil tapping like she’s solving national secrets. Even Uncle R has his quiet moments, sitting in his rocker humming to himself, pretending he doesn’t love the attention from passersby who stop to wave.

There’s also been a lot of time spent in the kitchen, though it’s mostly to avoid the oven. We’ve been eating cool things—chicken salad with grapes, cucumber sandwiches, chilled corn soup (which Ma calls “fancy grits water”), and, of course, plenty of peach everything. I tried my hand at a no-bake strawberry pie and it was gone in under ten minutes. I think that’s a sign to make another one—or five.

One of the best parts of July is that it forces you to slow down. There’s no rushing around when the heat’s this high. You plan your errands around the early morning hours, and you make peace with the fact that laundry will stay in the basket a little longer. It’s a time for forgiving your own pace, for giving yourself permission to rest, and for understanding that there’s nothing lazy about enjoying a slow, simple afternoon.

The other night, after the sun had finally dropped below the trees, we sat on the porch eating bowls of vanilla ice cream with fresh blueberries. No one talked much. The cicadas were humming, the dog was snoring at our feet, and the breeze—bless it—finally showed up to cool things down. Ma leaned over and said, “You know, even when it’s miserable hot, I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.” And I knew exactly what she meant.

Because summer in the South, for all its frustrations and sticky moments, has a way of making you fall in love with your life. It’s the laughter echoing down the street from kids playing in sprinklers. It’s the way neighbors check in just to see if you’ve melted. It’s the sticky fingers from ripe peaches and the hum of lawn mowers in the distance. It’s community and chaos, family and flavor, heat and heart all rolled up into a big messy hug.

So here’s to July’s sweltering fun—may it leave us sun-kissed, story-filled, and just grateful enough for air conditioning to never take it for granted again. And if you need me, I’ll be on the porch with Ma, watching Uncle R try to fix the birdbath. Again.

It had a lot of rough moments (tore off my toenail and broke the toe, my mom was in the hospital for a week), but I did get to San Francisco for a weekend break, which was nice.

My July has been quite uneventful. I am just trying to keep my plants watered. The heat is really bad.

July was a blast! We drove up to New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia on our motorcoach. We saw the largest tides in the world and walked on the ocean floor at low tide. We went to Roosevelt Campobello, FDR’s summer house where, unfortunately, my mom fell down the stairs, bruised her back and bumped her head. After an ambulance ride and a CAT scan, my mom somehow did NOT a lot of damage except a sore head and back spasms!

July was a hot mess of humidity and stress honestly. But I did get to celebrate my two best friends birthdays – so that made up for it. So ready for fall!

I’ve been working in my garden hybridizing daylilies. My grandchildren have had birthdays, school events, and athletic matches to keep me busy too. I’m not really a fan of the summer months, so I’m looking forward to September when everything starts to feel more like fall.

July started in England. My husband and I traveled there for Ozzy’s last concert. It ended back home with medical tests that have turned out to be negative. I spent most of July worrying for nothing.
