Life Lately: June’s Warm Embrace

Life Lately: June’s Warm Embrace

There’s something about June that wraps around you like a favorite quilt that’s been warmed by the sun. It doesn’t knock on the door or wait for an invitation—it just breezes in with its fireflies, backyard laughter, and the scent of honeysuckle drifting through open windows. Around here, June doesn’t announce itself with fanfare. It hums. It simmers. It invites you to slow down, wipe the sweat from your brow, and find the rhythm of summer’s easy sway.

June has always felt like a turning point, a shift from spring’s burst of energy into the soft drawl of summer. The garden starts to stretch its arms wide, the tomatoes ripen right before your eyes, and you suddenly remember how good cold watermelon tastes on a front porch swing. It’s a time when the days are long but the moments feel even longer—in the best possible way.

Life lately at Shady Pines has been humming right along, much like the cicadas in the trees. After the whirlwind of spring—planting, pruning, hauling, tidying—we’ve finally hit that sweet spot where everything seems to settle into place. The porch is dressed in ferns and rockers. The lemonade pitcher has a permanent spot in the fridge. And the afternoons carry that magical blend of heat and stillness that practically demands you sit a spell.

Ma has mostly bounced back from her recent illness, thank the Lord. She’s still got a cough that pops up every now and again just when she wants attention, but if she’s well enough to criticize my gardening technique from the shade of her lawn chair, she’s well enough. Uncle R, meanwhile, has taken to napping in the afternoons and claiming it’s “to better understand the daily rhythms of the house.” Translation: he wants to sleep with the box fan pointed directly at his face while pretending he’s doing scientific research. Let the man live.

The heat has rolled in a bit earlier than usual this year. Not that we weren’t expecting it—we’re in the South after all—but it’s a different kind of heat when June hits. Not yet the full slap of July, but a sultry, whispering kind that starts early in the morning and doesn’t loosen its grip until well after sundown. We’ve taken to doing most of our outside work before 10 a.m., and then again around 6 p.m., when the air is just a little less bossy.

In between, there are chores, of course, but also these small, golden moments I’ve been trying to hold onto. Like the way the birds go quiet right before the afternoon storm rolls in, or the hum of the ceiling fan over a book that I may or may not finish reading. I’ve been making peace with the undone things lately. The weeds that keep coming back. The sewing machine that still hasn’t seen as much use as I swore it would back in January. The stack of recipes I’ve clipped but haven’t cooked. June reminds me that nothing has to be hurried. Everything in its own time.

I’ve also been leaning into a bit more self-care now that the pace has eased up. That might look like ten minutes on the porch with a cool washcloth over my eyes. Or a mid-morning glass of cucumber water while Ma and Uncle R argue about whether their neighbor’s cat is part raccoon. I even tried a new lavender body lotion this week that smelled like a summer evening in a bottle. It’s the little things that make all the difference.

Speaking of little things, our tomatoes are coming in like they’ve got something to prove. I pulled my first Cherokee Purple off the vine two days ago and just about cried over how sweet it was. There’s something sacred about that first tomato sandwich of the season—soft white bread, Duke’s mayo, a sprinkle of salt, and that sun-warmed slice so full of flavor you could swear it’s saying “Welcome home.” And don’t get me started on the squash and zucchini. I’ve been slipping them into everything from pasta to cornbread. Uncle R accused me of hiding squash in the pancakes last weekend. (He wasn’t wrong.)

We’ve also started getting ready for a few summer celebrations. My birthday’s coming up at the end of August, and if Ma has her way, we’ll be having fried chicken, potato salad, and some sort of coconut dessert. She’s also insisting on homemade lemonade with mint, which means I better keep that little pot on the porch alive. The Fourth of July is on the horizon too, and I’ve already got a trifle recipe I want to try. Mixed berries, whipped cream, and layers of angel food cake—it’s practically a patriotic duty.

But for now, June is all we need. June, with its glowing evenings and wildflower bouquets. June, with its soft invitation to pause, reflect, and enjoy the fruits of early summer. Life lately may not be perfect—laundry piles up, the grass still needs mowing twice a week, and Ma accidentally melted her dentures cup in the microwave last Tuesday—but it is good. Simple, slow, and honest.

There’s joy to be found in the everyday—especially when the everyday includes juicy peaches, thunderstorms rolling in across the horizon, and the sound of laughter floating up from a card game on the porch. There’s joy in knowing that we’re here, doing life side by side, fanning ourselves through the heat, finding grace in between chores and chaos.

So here’s to June’s warm embrace. May we carry its comfort with us all season long. And may we never forget to say thank you for ripe tomatoes, quiet mornings, rocking chairs, and good company.

Now if you’ll excuse me, there’s a pitcher of iced tea calling my name—and if I’m lucky, Ma hasn’t eaten the last of the peach cobbler.

I just had peach cobbler and ice cream. Enjoyed it after Sunday Supper, which was
after church. I grew up in the south and sweet iced tea was all I knew to drink. I can so agree on June. It has seemed really hot, but I don’t miss the cold one bit.

June was endless, but less stressed than July…
