Maintaining Oral Health in Our Golden Years: Tips and Strategies

Jan 27, 2023 | Rita

As we age, our oral health can become increasingly important. As we get older, our teeth and gums can become more susceptible to decay and disease. However, with proper care and attention, we can maintain healthy teeth and gums well into our golden years.

One of the most important things to keep in mind when it comes to oral health at an older age is the importance of regular dental check-ups. As we age, our teeth and gums can become more vulnerable to decay and disease, so it’s essential to schedule regular check-ups with your dentist to catch any potential issues early on. During these check-ups, your dentist will clean your teeth, check for signs of decay or disease, and make recommendations for any necessary treatment.

Another important factor in maintaining oral health as we age is keeping up with good oral hygiene habits. Brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing at least once a day can help prevent plaque buildup, which can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. It’s also important to use a toothpaste that contains fluoride, which can help strengthen tooth enamel and prevent cavities.

In addition to regular dental check-ups and good oral hygiene habits, eating a healthy diet is also crucial for maintaining oral health as we age. A diet that is high in sugar can contribute to tooth decay, so it’s important to limit your intake of sugary foods and drinks. Eating a diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables can also help keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Another important aspect of oral health at an older age is being mindful of the potential for jaw problems. As we age, our jawbone can weaken and shrink, which can lead to a condition called osteoporosis of the jaw. This can make it difficult to chew and speak, and can also lead to tooth loss. To prevent or manage jaw problems, it’s important to maintain good oral hygiene and to get regular dental check-ups. Your dentist may also recommend exercises to help strengthen your jaw muscles, and may suggest a diet that is high in calcium and vitamin D to help keep your jaw healthy.

For older adults, it’s also important to be mindful of any medications you are taking, as some can have an impact on your oral health. Some medications can cause dry mouth, which can make it more difficult for your mouth to produce the saliva it needs to stay healthy. Other medications can cause changes in the color of your teeth or gums, so it’s important to talk to your dentist or doctor about any concerns you may have.

Overall, maintaining oral health as we age is an ongoing process that requires regular check-ups, good oral hygiene habits, a healthy diet and being mindful of any medications that could affect your oral health. By keeping these things in mind, you can help ensure that you enjoy healthy teeth and gums well into your golden years.

These are great tips and an excellent plan to keep your teeth and gums healthy, unfortunately this ship has sailed for me but I can be a cautionary tale for my family and friends on what will happen if you ignore your oral health

I really am fearful of the dentist. Goes all the way back to my childhood. I have had 4 dental implants under sedation. I am more mindful of my teeth than anything else.
