Midlife Lessons from a New Backpack

Aug 18, 2025 | Rita

Midlife Lessons from a New Backpack

I did something unexpected last week. I bought a new backpack. Not a purse, not a tote, not a crossbody that promises to keep my shoulder pain at bay—but an actual backpack. One with padded straps, zipper compartments, and enough space to carry everything I might need for a spontaneous adventure or just a run to the library.

Now before you ask if I’m going on a hike (bless your heart), let me say no—I’m not scaling any mountains. I bought it because I was tired of juggling a purse, my planner, my water bottle, a book I’ll swear I’m going to finish this week, and whatever Ma or Uncle R hands me as I’m heading out the door. A backpack just made sense.

But the more I’ve used it, the more I’ve realized: this little bag is teaching me a thing or two about life at this stage. Who knew midlife wisdom could be hiding behind a zipper and some canvas?

It’s Okay to Choose Function Over Fashion

There was a time when I wouldn’t be caught dead carrying a backpack unless it was designer, leather, and still managed to look like it couldn’t hold more than a lipstick and a breath mint. These days? Give me something that won’t cut off circulation to my arm, thank you very much.

This backpack is roomy. It holds all my essentials, doesn’t slide off my shoulder when I bend over, and actually zips up all the way—no bulging, no praying it doesn’t pop open in the parking lot. And I love it.

One of the most freeing things about midlife is realizing that looking good and feeling good don’t have to be at war. Comfort, ease, and practicality are the new elegance in my book. Whether it’s shoes that don’t pinch, clothes that let me breathe, or a bag that can carry both snacks and sanity, I’ve learned to choose what works over what just looks the part.

You Don’t Have to Carry Everything Alone

The first time I packed up my new backpack and slung it over my shoulders, I actually let out a little sigh of relief. No more shoulder strain. No more cramping fingers from trying to hold a purse, a water bottle, and three errands’ worth of receipts. The weight was the same—but it was finally balanced.

Midlife has a funny way of reminding us that we’ve been carrying a lot. Not just physically, but emotionally. We’ve carried responsibilities, expectations, grief, joy, and memories. We’ve carried people when they needed us. And often, we’ve tried to carry it all alone.

This little backpack reminded me that redistributing weight makes the journey easier. Sometimes that means asking for help. Sometimes it means letting go of something that doesn’t serve you anymore. And sometimes, it just means being smart enough to buy the dang backpack.

Pockets Bring Peace

I never knew how much I needed a pocket for my pens, a slot for my notebook, and a separate zipper just for gum and hand lotion. Now that I’ve got them, I’m feeling organized in a way I haven’t in a long time. I know where things are. I can find my keys in less than two minutes. That’s progress, friends.

In life, pockets are the routines, habits, and boundaries we set up to make the everyday feel less chaotic. When I was younger, I thought flying by the seat of my pants made me exciting. These days, I like knowing what’s for dinner, when my next appointment is, and that I have Advil within reach.

Having pockets—literal and figurative—gives me a little room to breathe. And in midlife, breathing room is the real luxury.

You’re Never Too Old to Start Something New

Buying that backpack made me feel a little like a kid getting ready for the first day of school. There was a thrill in choosing the color, unzipping all the compartments, and imagining how I’d use it. It felt fresh. It felt like possibility.

And that, more than anything, is what I’m holding onto. Just because I’m in my 40s—or 50s or 60s—doesn’t mean the novelty has to stop. I can still start something new, learn a skill, shift my priorities, or carry my things differently. Midlife isn’t the end of something; it’s a chance to begin again, with better shoes and more sense.

Even Small Changes Can Lighten the Load

This wasn’t a grand reinvention. It was just a change in how I carry what I carry. But it made a big difference. And isn’t that so often the case in life? A small shift in perspective, a change in routine, or a simple yes to something different can be the thing that makes life easier, more joyful, and less exhausting.

When we’re younger, we think big leaps are the only way to grow. But in this season of life, I’m learning to celebrate the little changes that bring more peace, more ease, and more laughter. Even if it’s something as simple as a new backpack.

It’s Okay to Take Up Space

I used to worry about being “too much.” Too loud, too needy, too emotional, too complicated. I carried bags that were small, neat, and delicate because I thought that was how I should be too.

But this new backpack is not shy. It’s roomy, bold, and takes up space. And I love that. It reminds me that it’s okay to take up room in the world—to have needs, wants, and preferences. It’s okay to say, “I need something that works for me.” That isn’t selfish. It’s smart.

Midlife gives you the gift of knowing what you need and not apologizing for it. Whether it’s a nap at 2 p.m., a second piece of cake, or a backpack that can hold all your nonsense and then some.

Final Thoughts from the Porch

I never thought a backpack would bring me a midlife epiphany, but here we are. Life’s full of small moments with big lessons if you’re paying attention. This week, mine came with adjustable straps and a side pocket for snacks.

So if you’re in a season where things feel heavy, or a little disorganized, or like you just need something different, I encourage you to start small. Buy the backpack. Take the walk. Ask for help. Make the shift, even if it feels silly.

You never know what kind of wisdom is waiting in the simplest changes. And if you find something that makes life just a little bit easier, you owe it to yourself to say yes.

Just don’t be surprised if Ma tries to borrow it. She’s already eyeing mine like she’s got a trip to the bingo hall planned and needs room for her lucky dabbers.

I have a purse/utility bag that does all that you never realized you needed. The whole inside is a separate bag. It’s quite stiff and you can remove it all in one piece, then you can just wash the carrier bag. I love it!
