Beyond The Margarita, Delicious Mexican Alcoholic Beverages

Jul. 04, 2014

To be sure, the margarita has its place in the hearts and stomachs of the world. It’s a classically delicious adult beverage that can be prepared and enjoyed in a number of ways. However, the margarita is not the only Mexican alcoholic beverage. If you’re in the mood to try something new with a Latin flare, consider the following cocktails.

Sangria

This bright red cocktail gets its name from the word ‘sangre,’ Spanish for blood. It is usually made with red wine.

Ingredients:

  • 3 fl oz red wine
  • 2 fl oz Spanish brandy
  • 1 fl oz orange juice
  • ice cubes
  • soda water to top up
  • 1 slice of orange or lime

Directions:

Step #1 Pour red wine, brandy and orange juice over ice cubes in an eight ounce highball glass. Stir well to mix.

Step #2 Top with soda water and serve garnished with a slice of orange or lime.

Enjoy!

Tequila Sunrise

While it was originally created in Arizona, this drink quickly became a favorite. There are actually more than ten different versions of the original, which was reportedly created in the 1930’s.

Ingredients:

  • 2 fl oz tequila
  • 4 fl oz fresh orange juice
  • 2 teaspoons grenadine
  • ice cubes
  • 1 slice of orange

Directions:

Step #1 Pour the tequila and orange juice into a cocktail shaker along with ice cubes. Shake well to mix.

Step #2 Strain the mixture over ice cubes and pour into an eight ounce highball glass.

Step #3 Add the grenadine slowly by tilting the glass such that it goes to the bottom of the glass. It’ll look like a sunrise as the red grenadine gradually rises through the orange liquid.

Step #4 Garnish with slice of orange and serve.

Enjoy!

I wish I could enjoy a alcoholic beverage without the side effects. I just feel so tired out the next day after having a drink.

I’m sorry! Try them virgin, they are still just as good and you may enjoy them.

I don’t drink very often but I do like Sangria. I will have to try your recipe. My friend and I are always looking for new Sangria recipes to try. That way we don’t feel to guilty if we mix it with other things. 🙂

A sangria is always a great choice! I would love to try the tequila sunrise. I need to make these drinks next time we have a outdoor party. I love putting the garnish on the drinks, my favorite is a strawberry as a garnish.
