Fall Is Coming: The First Pumpkin Spice Sighting

Fall Is Coming: The First Pumpkin Spice Sighting

It happens every year like clockwork. The calendar barely switches from August, the thermometer may still hover in the upper 90s, but somewhere—whether in a coffee shop, a grocery store display, or your neighbor’s kitchen—you catch the first whiff of pumpkin spice. And just like that, fall has announced its arrival.

For some, it’s a joyful signal to dust off the boots, grab a cozy sweater, and lean into all things autumn. Unless you live in the South and you can’t even begin to think of those things. For others, it’s a rolling-of-the-eyes moment that feels a bit too soon. But no matter how you feel, there’s no denying that pumpkin spice has become the unofficial ambassador of the season.

The Power of a Flavor

Pumpkin spice is more than just a latte. It’s cookies, candles, muffins, granola, even popcorn if you dare. The blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger somehow transforms even the most ordinary treat into a fall celebration. Marketers know this, which is why you’ll soon see “limited edition” pumpkin spice everything lining the shelves.

It’s funny, though, how the first sighting can spark such excitement. Maybe it’s because after a long, hot summer, we’re ready for the promise of crisp mornings and golden leaves. That sip of pumpkin spice is like a little preview of the cozy season ahead.

A Personal Tradition

I’ll admit it—I’m firmly in the “bring it on” camp. The first pumpkin spice latte of the year feels like a tradition. It’s not just a drink, it’s a seasonal marker, like putting out fall wreaths or hearing the high school marching band practice in the evenings. I don’t drink them every day, but that first one? It’s magic.

Of course, I balance it with laughter too. The pumpkin spice craze has gotten so big that it’s almost comical. I’ve seen pumpkin spice dog treats, deodorant, and even pumpkin spice Spam. (Yes, it’s real. No, I’m not trying it.)

The Cozy Season Ahead

So, whether you’re ready to order your latte iced, hot, or not at all, the first pumpkin spice sighting is a reminder: fall is coming. Soon there will be evenings spent on porches with blankets, football games under the lights, and the steady rhythm of leaves crunching beneath our feet.

And that little sprinkle of spice? It’s just the beginning.

I love everything pumpkin spice! It heralds the transition to autumn, so I always get excited when pumpkin spice goodies start popping up.

My first PSL was in a local coffee shop in Canada (we travel in the US and Canada for 6 months in the summer/fall). It was soooo good.

I do like the scent of a pumpkin spice candle, as long as it is not overpowering. I’m excited for the cooler weather to settle in.

I tend to find most pumpkin spice overpowering.
