I’ve been remembering this year about sitting at my grandmother’s table cracking pecans, while my grandmother, mother, and aunts bustled around the kitchen. A girl can learn a lot by listening to the women in the family as they cook.

My favourite ‘kitcheny’ memory is mainly just when I learnt to cook. My Nan was the one to teach me how, starting off with sponge bakes, and I love that that was our ‘special thing’. Even so many years later now we still love to bake and cook together!

My son’s 10th birthday, toward the end, kids were outside playing while me and my Mom, cousin and Aunt started to clean up, First some frosting on my nose, I put frosting back on my Aunts nose … next thing you know we’re in a full food fight with the last of the cake! It was hilarious until kids caught us. Then there was a little role reversal moment, which again … made us laugh! lol

But, the cookies turned out delicious and we made a memory so it was all worth it 🙂

Most of my best kitchen memories involve baking with my two daughters. Last year we rolled out gingerbread cookies. By the time we got to the end of the batch, there were scraps of gingerbread all over the floor and the girls were jumping up an down on pieces to “roll” it flat. It was a huge mess, but so fun in the making!

  30. Eileen Richter says

My mom had 9 of us and EVERY single day she made bread for our family. We lived on a farm and had a long driveway to walk home, about 3/4 a mile from the bus. When we’d get in the door after school we’d be greeted with the smell of fresh baked bread. We’d fight over who’d get the “heels” of the 3 loaves and slather it with butter or homemade jam. I miss her bread.

She also taught me to quilt and I made my first lap quilt under her guidance and quilting because a small obsession for me. I thank her for my love of cooking/baking and quilting. My favorite memories from in the kitchen are when I was a little girl and I baked with my mom; especially Xmas cookies and then when I was a mom and Shannon, my daughter would stand on a chair and baked with me.

I loved to bake with my mom as a child. I remember my sister and I both with chairs pushed up to the kitchen cabinets with my mom in between us. I’m sure having both my sister and I “trying” to help her bake really slowed her down!

I love baking with my boys! One time we made 4 different kinds of muffins and a ton of cupcakes for a bake sale and when my husband got home from work we had flour everywhere! It looked like it snowed in the kitchen and it was so much fun!
