Every year, there is this quiet expectation that comes with spring. We are supposed to feel lighter. More energized. Ready to start fresh. The world outside begins to bloom, and somehow we are expected to bloom right along with it.
But what happens when that does not happen?
What happens when spring arrives, and instead of feeling renewed, you still feel tired? Still a little heavy. Still not quite ready to step into something new. I have been thinking about that a lot lately.
The Pressure of a “Fresh Start”
Spring carries a certain kind of pressure, whether we realize it or not. We see it everywhere. The idea of renewal. Of starting over. Of becoming a better version of ourselves now that the weather is warmer and the days are longer.
It sounds beautiful in theory. But in real life, it can feel overwhelming. Because life does not always line up with the seasons. Just because the calendar says it is time for a fresh start does not mean we are emotionally or mentally ready for one.
And that is okay.
When Your Energy Doesn’t Match the Season
The trees are budding. The flowers are opening. The light is softer and stays a little longer each evening. And yet, inside, things might still feel quiet. Or slow. Or even a little stuck. That disconnect can feel confusing. You look around and see signs of growth everywhere, and you wonder why you are not feeling it too.
But growth does not always happen on the same timeline for everyone. Just like some flowers bloom later than others, we move through our own seasons at our own pace. There is no rule that says you have to feel energized just because it is spring.
Carrying Winter Forward
Sometimes we carry winter with us longer than expected. Not the cold weather, but the emotional weight. The slower pace. The fatigue that built up over the past few months.
For me, that weight did not disappear the moment March ended. It has lingered. Softened, yes, but still present in quiet ways. And I am beginning to understand that there is nothing wrong with that. We do not flip a switch when the seasons change. We transition. Gradually.
Midlife Teaches a Different Kind of Rhythm
Midlife has a way of changing how we experience these seasonal shifts. There was a time when I would have pushed myself to match the energy of spring. I would have made lists, set goals, and tried to move faster just because it felt like I should.
Now, I listen more.
If my body says rest, I rest.
If my mind feels full, I slow down.
If my energy is low, I do not force it higher.
There is a rhythm to life that has less to do with the calendar and more to do with awareness. And I trust that rhythm more now than I ever have.
Redefining What a Fresh Start Looks Like
Maybe a fresh start does not have to be dramatic. Maybe it is not about changing everything all at once or becoming someone new. Maybe it is something much quieter than that.
Maybe a fresh start looks like this:
- Getting out of bed on a day when it feels hard.
- Opening the window and letting in fresh air.
- Choosing one small thing to do instead of ten.
That kind of fresh start does not look impressive from the outside. But it feels real.
And real is better than perfect.
Letting Yourself Be Where You Are
There is a lot of freedom in allowing yourself to be exactly where you are, even if it does not match what the season suggests. If you feel energized, that is wonderful. Lean into it. If you feel tired, that is valid too. Honor it.
You do not have to rush into growth. You do not have to force yourself into a new version of yourself just because the world around you is changing. You can move slowly. You can take your time.
You can let spring meet you where you are instead of trying to catch up to it.
Life at Shady Pines, Still Moving Slowly
Life here continues in its steady rhythm. Ma has already started talking about all the things she wants to do now that the weather is warmer. Uncle R remains completely unfazed, moving through each day at his own pace as if the seasons are just a suggestion.
And me? I am somewhere in the middle. I am noticing the change. I am appreciating the light. But I am not rushing to match it. There is something comforting about that.
A Different Kind of Growth
Growth does not always look like forward motion. Sometimes it looks like staying steady when things feel uncertain. Sometimes it looks like resting instead of pushing. Sometimes it looks like choosing gentleness over urgency.
That kind of growth is quieter. It does not draw attention. But it is just as important. Especially in seasons like this.
Closing Thoughts
If spring has arrived where you are and you are not feeling that sense of renewal everyone talks about, you are not alone. There is no rule that says you have to feel refreshed just because the flowers are blooming. You are allowed to move at your own pace. You are allowed to carry parts of winter with you a little longer. You are allowed to take your time finding your way into this new season.
Spring will still be here. And when you are ready, you will meet it in your own way. Until then, it is enough to simply be where you are.
